I find people talking about Star Trek’s uplifting optimistic view of the future funny
It’s not half as weeping-on-the-floor hilarious as Enjolras’s speech in Les Misérables from atop the barricades of the failed June Rebellion in 1832 Paris, about how awesome and full of love and unity and human kindness the 20th Century was sure to be.

@Background Pony #16DB
Favorite version of the Enterprise?

I like the Ambassador Class NCC-1701-C; it had the largest Engineering hull relative to saucer section and warp nacelles, and an overall very effective rounded design aesthetic.

@Background Pony #21F7
None of the attempts to revive it, either in movies or in episodic TV format, has come close

Have you seen the animated series? It’s hard to get more Star Trek than a Star Trek series where the actors for two of the three main characters flatly refused to reprise their roles unless the original actors for the rest of the mains were brought back as well.

I find people talking about Star Trek’s uplifting optimistic view of the future funny since that view include a war in the 90s about genetic superiority.

@Background Pony #21F7
I’ll argue the assertion that TNG was spotty (it is to this day my favorite of the series), but I mostly agree with you on your other points. Original Star Trek at its best had a kind of uplifting, hopeful optimism about the future you hardly saw back then, and even less frequently nowadays.
Background Pony #B134
I personally always preferred 1960s Trek to any of the later attempts to squeeze more money out of the concept. The movies were spotty. TNG was spottier. I haven’t been able to get through even half an episode of anything later than TNG.

1960s Trek was an artifact of its era. It was essentially optimistic, with an essentially optimistic premise, that was an uplifted middle finger to all the fashionable “we’re all doooooooomed” stuff that has since then taken over cultural discourse in the West. It was high camp full of technobabble nonsense that didn’t take itself terribly seriously most of the time, with Shatner and Kelley chewing the scenery gleefully whenever the directors let them off their leashes. It was also sometimes insightful, genuinely intelligent geopolitical allegory, and that was, in my opinion, when it was at its best. None of the attempts to revive it, either in movies or in episodic TV format, has come close.

I keep this version in a playlist I save for my “depressive episodes,” where those last words are edited out. When I’m in very dark places, that video is truly a light to guide the way out. :)

I KNOW there used to be a version out there with the Mentos theme playing. I can’t seem to find it anymore. Wouldn’t surprise me if the company who makes them, Perfetti Van Melle Corp., or Rick Berman (because really, what’s HE doing these days?) scrubbed it from teh Intarwebz.

Deep Space Nine got it worse. The new Defiant was supposed to be the NCC-74205-A but instead it had the exact same registry as the old Defiant so they could use stock footage. Pretty sad the Deep Space Nine finale couldn’t get all new footage when the Next Generation finale got two new starship models and an upgraded Enterprise for the future timeline.

There were plans early on to have the Voyager get increasingly damaged over time, but that would’ve been costly. The Next Generation relied on a library of stock Enterprise shots to save money, and they wanted to do the same with Voyager. They couldn’t do that if the ship’s appearance kept changing.

Here are all these people talking about DS9, and here I am watching Babylon 5.

Janeway always fascinated me in that she seems to be the most “typical” of the Captains in terms of ideology and methodology; we spent the first 3 series following what were effectively Federation outliers, and it was interesting to follow a captain that actually followed the regulations and codes of the Federation proper.

That said, SF Debris’s version of her is my favorite Star Trek villain. And coffee really should only be drunk black. XD

Currently my thoughts on the series are:
Original: Fun and cool, I can look past the poor aging of parts to appreciate it for what it was and what it created.
TNG: Solid series. Rough first couple of seasons, but after that I really enjoy it and love many episodes.
DS9: The Sisko is the best captain, and I really enjoy most of the series. Though it got a bit rough in the last season with the Prophets.
Voyager: Great premise and the ship itself is awesome. But it was dragged down by failure to use the premise to its fullest. Over-use of he “Reset button”, and no lasting “lack” of resources. Would have loved to see the ship become more patchwork and “rundown” as the series progressed. [Additional: Robert Picardo NAILED his role!]
Enterprise: I liked the opening theme, seeing the different “Enterprise” ships throughout history. And they had a couple of good stories~
I’ll probably get a bit of flack for this, but I actually never cared all that much for Deep Space 9. I will give it full credit for having some of the more complex storylines Star Trek has done, but I always felt some of that came at the cost of what the series was supposed to be about. I mean, I remember reading somewhere that one of the reasons Gene Roddenberry annoyed a lot of writers for the original series and early Next Generation episodes was because he always wanted the conflict in the stories to be external from the Enterprise crew, on the basis that this was supposed to be a future in which we had moved past the vast majority of humanity’s negative traits. And while I think we could debate all day whether that’s a good idea or not (I personally think some of the best episodes of The Next Generation came after Roddenberry’s death when the characters were allowed to be a bit more flawed), it made the show one of very few to offer the idea that humanity’s future would be a hopeful one (something even modern shows about the future don’t do too often). And that’s probably the big problem I always had with Deep Space 9. It always felt like the characters were too much like us currently, and not like what we could be.

But again, that’s personal opinion. The series had a fair number of really impressive episodes during its run, and even an episode that seems representative of my biggest complaint, “In the Pale Moonlight”, I freely admit is a pretty remarkable one.

I also would liked to have seen the ship wear down, or they actually ran out of photon torpedoes like the pilot insinuated they could.

In regards to repair I guess that’s just the consequence of replicators. As long as they can find dilithium they can just make new parts ad infinitum

Voyager was the first Trek series I watched as it aired, and I was rather young, so I didn’t notice lot of the more questionable and non-sensible parts~
I got into the franchise through Next Generation and DS9 episodes. [I believe I started watching right at the tail end of Generation.]
