Because it hasn’t been explored at all in the show. The earliest point we’ve actually seen the sisters was the point they had to fight Discord with the Elements, which at that point they were in their leadership positions. And we’ve seen very very little of the two outside of any crisis situation to know how they are to each other normally.

I don’t know. This story implies this was before Celestia was to be the ruler, so she’s still in her teenaged years, so a harsher personality is not unexpected. Then with the banishment of Luna, that was the switch that flipped to make her a lot more compassionate.
 
Albeit brief, the part of Slice of Life showing them argue feels like a natural extension of two sisters that teased each other when they were much longer but since have grown up. They still play a bit of one-up-manship to each other but know it’s only sarcasming and not anything bitter.

Mm hmm. This comic proves my points that IDW DOES NOT understand how the characters of MLP:FiM should be written and that these kind of stories should be handled by the SHOW instead.
 
I can understand Celestia having a slightly different personality when she was young but NOT THIS! This is NOT Celestia. This is something I would expect from a third-rate edgy fanfic.
 
Unless there are other Celestia fans here who can justify Celestia’s behavior and convince me that nothing is wrong, then this comic is just trash.

My personal worst case scenario for the comic is Celestia being a total jerk towards Luna and treating her like garbage until the last two pages when she suddenly realizes what she did. It has been done to death.

Yes, I fully agree. While some teens are vicious, it’s far from all of them, and as I wrote bellow, the Teens are Jerks trope, at least as it’s most often as it’s presented, comes of as unrealistic, and in generall, makes characters very unlikable. There is a reason why western teen dramas/series about teens (which allmost allways use the Teens are Jerks trope), are the subject of ridicule. Or even comparing a work to a teen drama is at times an insult within itself.

The problem is, due to the fact writters think the exagerated form of Teens are Jerks trope, most often ruins characters, and there are clues this trope will be used, seeing how people, even on this page, are misguided “Teens are Jerks” is “realistic”, and a good trope, even though backfires, many more times than contributes to a good characterisation. It’s notable this, and the previous preview page, are the first canon instance that uses the Bitchlestia tag, and not a fan art, or edit.
 
Along with the stuff like I discussed before Princess Knave being implied in this comic to be soemething Starswol often calls Celestia, implying she may be here presented as pretty mean pony overally, and how she is written, she won’t come off as an appealling character in this comic in the end.
 
To be clear though, as mentioned a couple times bellow, I do hope I’m wrong, and I’m just nitpicking on something, before it even came out. (and yes, I do agree I was to emotional/judgemental at the start).
 
And not to mention, if I we agreed on everying with yo here, and had no doubts and fears about this comic, we wouldn’t have a discussion at all XD

You’d think no one here remembered their own teen years. I never observed that kind of behaviour in myself or my friends – I personally just never had any desire to push the limits.
 
About the worst that ever happened to me was unwittingly running up the phone bill from long talks with my girlfriend, or getting banned from instant messaging because I was too stupid not to directly quote my mother (actually a common problem with me in high school, not realizing when I shouldn’t be repeating things said in the privacy of the house) or to check the box that would hide my IM windows when away.

Well, I personally like this comic verison of Sisters. I hated bratty Celestia and childish Luna in Cook’s comic like “Reflections” because they were already old adult mares that should know better. In this comic they are actually teenage so their portrayal is much more realistic than in Amy’s book or any Faust headcanon. Let’s be honest, there is almost no teenagers who aren’t rebellious or mean when they grow up. Its the normal phase for most people. Every pychologist will tell you so.
 
It’s only degenerate and annoying when they would act this way after 1000 years of ruling by themselves. But as of now, it is clear that Starswirl is the one who takes care of all their responsibilities in Equestria.  
If i was the story editor I would probably just remove their cutie marks and made the story before the events in Journals of Two Sisters to make this comic perfect.

Well read what I wrote above. And it’s just I think it at least a pretty risky move, to have reveal a character (here Celestia) to have been originally an arrogant brat (nothing was ever even close to indicate that), just have an aesop in a story. And as I wrote bellow, I think the “Teens are Jerks” trope is overplayed, and not as realistic (at least as it usually turns out), as many writters seem to think.

Dude you’re really getting worked up over this. Just take a step back and calm down.
 
As for Celestia, remember that it’s a foregone conclusion that this teenage brat will turn into the wizened mentor in the show. More likely than not this issue’s character arc is gonna be about Starswirl teaching the teenage sisters some humility, and as such will probably end with them already showing some of the maturity they demonstrate in the show.
 
As for the retconing, the same dialogue that supposedly retcons Starswirl’s presence also mentions that he went on multiple sabbaticals. He could easily have disappeared before NMM then returned in time for Reflections before disappearing again sometime after.

We should wait for rest of the comics. Whitley is Hit&Miss writer, but when he “HIT” then its usually one of the best comics in the franchise. The rest of the writers are usually aiming between 0/10 - 7/10 where Jeremy hit either 1/10 or 10/10

The sisters had emotions, including anger. Being nice, doesn’t mean robotic. And really, teen characters being increadibly mean spirited, is an issue in western movies, series and novels about teens, to the point teen dramas are most often mocked for how unsympathetic, and beceause of that – ultimatelly boring are those jerkass teen characters.
 
I actually think the mentality teens must be shown as jerks/teens being horrible jerks is realism is the cause why so many (mostly western) works with teens, are bad, but YMMV.
 
And Celestia isn’t here playful, but very arrogant, and bullies her sister, just because she’s better than Luna at this.
 
What worries me the most, is how Starswirl seemingly has a nickname for Celestia Princess Knave, this may imply Celestia being an arrogant jerk, is something common, and Celestia will be portrayed as such for most of the comic.
 
If that’s the case, it’s a still a retcon without counting the Journal of Two Sisters, albeit then at least somewhat an additive retcon, but seeing how sudden and “in the face” is Celestia’s jerkass behavior, it at least somewhat OOC and/or Character Derailment, as nothing we knew previously (including the flashbacks in the cartoon and comics), indicated Celestia behaved so. And to change a characters characterization, just to tell an Aesop story, as this seems, does count as at least arguably a form of character derailment.
 
And about continuity, this issue, outright contradicts previous comics, and very visibly so:  

 
So we have already several unnecessary retcons in it, even towards the comic continuity.
 
To be clear, I DO HOPE I’M WRONG, it this story turns out well, and as wrote before, it would show Celestia is not so different than Sunset Shimmer:

Which would be really interesting, but I’m just really worried, as we have allready some warning signs a of story that goes turn out to be really bad, and would be just fuell for the stupid Celestia hatedom. Again though, I wish to be wrong in this case. The best this comic to be good, at least to me, for this story to be good, I think it should be at least suggested that Celestia even before learning her lesson, was at least nice, and good sister to Luna through half of the time, but I fear the comic won’t present it at such (and from the Princess Knave nickname, I have somewhat little hope it will.) Again though, YMMV bout that.
 
(And if this story will be bad, and turn Celestia into an outright jerk, and characterizes her as very unsympathetic, one can pretty discount it from canon/call it Fanon Discontinuity, seeing how much other stories it contradicts, as I wrote above, even from the comic.)

I think this comic give them more personality than the Journal becuase they are acting less like noble robots and more like actual teenagers who are still seeking adventure and fun.
 
And to people who think that Jeremy Whitley is ingoring the AKR book: He is the only writer in IDW and DHX who actually read the damn thing. He made Princess Amore based of that book. Making them more playfull is trying to make them look less like Mary Sue’s of being perfectly wise, strong and brave at their teenage years.
 
The only very visible retcon so far is Princess Luna not acting identically as in Luna Eclipse, which only happened because Amy didn’t know how to write young Luna as something other than Larson’s version which was her first canon appearance where she emoted.
