It would only fail if it won’t deliver in the last season. So far it goes smoothly the way i would write them. Discord is portrayed the way as he was crushing on her. Deluded are only people who think that it won’t become canon. SugarMac episode already BTFO a lot of anti-shippers.

Only hardcore Dislestia shippers saw the flower scene as shipping. Everyone else actually saw entire episode and realised that Discord could only apologise after sending them to tartarus. It’s like shipping a a thief with the old lady only because he apologised to her for stealing her purse after police already caught him and told him to do so.
Fluttercord on the other hand has as much focus in the story and dialouges that any new writer will see them as romantic.
See, this is why I’m not a big fan of the term “crack ship/pairing.” It seems like people really struggle to understand the concept and either end up using in the best case to describe ships they can’t understand the appeal of or in the worst case as a derogatory description of a ship they don’t like.
Look, crack ships are when the characters have actual obstacles that keep them being a couple, be they extreme ideological differences or great separation of time and space. Twibra could be called a crack ship at present as Sombra is both an enemy of Twilight and the mane six as well as kind of dead. Filthy Rich and Starswirl the Bearded is a crack ship for a lot of reasons, not the least of which the separation of the two by more than a thousand years.
Fluttershy: “What, people thought we were an item?”
Cheerilee: “I THOUGHT WE WERE AN ITEM!”
Luna: “Really, is that all he aspires to, when he could have us?”
Marble Pie: “I… I never had a boy look at me before… I thought maybe…”
Fleetfoot: “Sigh. That’s the seventh one I’ve lost this week.”
