They are in the same category. The show has animals that are intelligent and can talk. People draw them more human like, just like other creatures. To me that is the same category.

Yeah, honestly, much as is the case with the term “brony”, there’s almost as many definitions for furry as there are people who say they are one.
 
My own definition for what constitutes one is mostly centered around the interest itself. For me, being a furry means your interest is piqued when the subject of the medium (be it a movie, book, comic, TV series, etc.) involves anthropomorphism of a real, formerly real, or mythical living creature not typically depicted as being sentient, sapient, or in any way like a human. I like this definition for two reasons. First, because it has room for a wider range of species and design types (since the difference between human with cat ears and an actual talking cat don’t strike me as worth the fight, and because I wanted room for the unicorn, dragon and other mythic creature enthusiasts), and second, because it also allows for better consideration of overlapping, Venn diagram style interests. To the second point, I offer the old brony but not a furry debate. With my definition I feel that sort of thing is allowed, because if the draw for you to be into MLP is entirely about the personalities of the characters or the stories and has nothing to do at all with the involvement of anthropomorphic horses, then you actually can be a brony without being a furry as well. At the same time, being a furry and a brony doesn’t mean only liking the show for anthropomorphism, but simply means that hearing the premise of the show involved humanized horses is as big of a draw as any of the other things it offers.
 
But again, that is only my thought on the matter. Hopefully it’s expressed in a way that makes some modicum of sense.
