Yes. Which is why anyone trying to say, “liking x makes you a furry” kind of unhinges me. The only exception of subjectivity is what we can all agree is furry stuff: oc, non-human/human hybrids with strange bestial facial features and nearly-perfect human bodies covered in fur, with either paws or actual feet.

I guess I view ‘anatomy purists’ as true furies. Although, I think xenomorphs are only ‘furry’ when they are given boobs. Disgusting. Xenomorphs are beautiful just the way they are: no tits needed. Especially the queen. That ovipositor? Unf.

I haven’t checked up on it in a long time, but if I’m remembering correctly, HTH last had some serious controversy surrounding it after the creator failed to do… pretty much anything after soliciting a bunch of money and taking preorders for a bigger, finished version. Which wasn’t all that surprising given how slow the development of the original thing went, with tiny pieces here and there.

Oh, thank fuck Elfwood went down, haha. My idiot teenage self actually went and name-connected my IRL name to my online name when talking to an old friend on there, this being significantly before the days when everyone had stuff like Facebook. And ironically, Elftown is still up it looks like, which is the version of that site that I actually spent all of the time on.

The culture did not begin on the internet. Just with any culture it allowed it to spread very far, very wide. But the roots of the actual culture began in print medium, mostly comics and newsletters, in the early 70s. We’re not talking stuff like Bugs Bunny comics, but actual original furry characters. They were first referred to as “Funny Animals” before “Furry” superseded it.
 

 
You see, I’m not the one who came up with the definition. The OG furries themselves did. AKA the people in the culture when it began. This is why I said younger generations aren’t as familiar because what they assume comes from what they’ve heard on the greater internet. To put this into perspective, imagine 40 years from now Brony culture is still around, but the newer generations, who never actually saw the show when it originally aired, are making up their own definitions of the fandom. One group tells you that Bronies are only the people who were fans of the original show and nothing more. Another group claims that Bronies are exclusively those people who are into the clop. Yet another gets meta and tries telling you that “true Bronies” are the people who liked Starlight while hating Sunset. And they argue with one another over what actually defines a “Brony.”
 
 
Now imagine you see all these people. How would you feel about it? That’s where I’m coming from. I remember the old days.

I agree with you, tbh.  
I think people are being terribly dishonest with trying to tie a millennia year old cultures with some obscure subculture on the Internet just because of what they depicted. And I also think people misinterpret what anthropomorphism actually is.  
I think Vinyl Fluff gave the most widely know definition. It’s original usage came from theology by being used to describe God when He understands human emotion and language since He is an omnipotent being. It’s also applies of things.  
I disagree with Vinyl Fluff trying to tie anthropomorphism to furryism when discussing it in the context of animals. It’s clear that the subculture doesn’t agree with all animal anthroporphism being tied to its subculture identity.  
For example I’ve seen furries try to distant from what the call “feral”, which is a mostly animal shape, because to some of them it’s too close to zoophilia since the overall physiology of the character is zoomorphic.  
And on sites like e621 humanizations are banned despite humanized being the upper echelon of anthropomorphism and I doubt you’ll find much people willing to say that human versions of animals fall under the furry umbrella despite those being more anthropomorphic than “anthro”.  
It’s obvious most furries have an idea what falls under the “furry” umbrella and that’s always evolving.  
I think it’s silly trying to tie people with some obscure subculture as well. I really doubt most people, even those in the animation industry, know about furries. For example the guy that worked on Night at the Woods was completely unaware that furries existed and his game was pretty much all talking animals. I think the same for the Undertale dude. Anthropomorphic animals are a pretty mainstream and popular genre while furries are not.  
What I think is fair is to recognize that it’s a subculture built around an idea rather than being the end all of that concept. I think it’s fair to recognize that brony culture as a different identity than that of furries.
