None of the other legends were brougth up beforehand save for Somnambula, who was said to have created a weather spell, and shown to be a pegasus.

I’d think the very term “legend” implies some level of questioning; it’s not like they said it was the “history” of Rockhoof (or Mistmane or Flash Magnus, for that matter, though the latter at least seems really close to the truth).

||At this point, I’m not sure if this is a continuity error or they will acknowledge the information about the history of meadowbrook was wrong. Guess the finale will answer this. ||

Yeah, they dun goofed. And I think Meadowbrook became a more interesting character as a result, so I’m OK with it.

Simple explanation: Twilight hadn’t studied Eastern unicorns enough to know that Meadowbrook wasn’t one of them. :P

if you noticed, each of the stories so far has had at least one artifact. albeit that leaves 2

As hazy as ponies appear to be on their history in general, this actually shouldn’t surprise anyone. For example, why is it that every significant ancient historical event occurred “a thousand years ago”? My guess is ponies have no concept of historical time, and anything outside of living memory to them is legendary. It’s no wonder names, races and locations get jumbled up, then.

I bet you they also retconned the “Eight Magical Artifacts”.  
Yet, whether or not the Alicorn Amulet Trixie used back in season 3 was one of them is up to debate. That wasn’t retconned and was mentioned as recently as No Second Prances

probably too late for it to be a possibility, but she coulda’ gained a horn.

Also, who said only Unicorns can wield staves? I guess an earth pony like Meadowbrook can wield magical items since the items themselves are enchanted. But maybe the east/south thing can be confusing.

it is odd. so it could be a mixup when naming these hero ponies, or it could be intentional, as legends and myths could get mixed up.
