Don’t forget that you’re (likely) comparing the magic of alicorns (plus OP Starlight) against all earth ponies. They should be better than an earth pony at such tasks, because they possess the abilities and affinities of all three tribes.

As of right now, the unicorns can currently trivialize earth pony activities. Levitation can do everything strength can do, and magic can also grow plants larger, faster, and stronger than we’ve seen earth ponies do in the show.
I wonder what this show would be like if the races were carefully balanced like a competitive video game. Because, as of right now, there are no limitations on what unicorn magic can do, and I don’t like it one bit.

Earth Ponies can’t use magic without the aid of potions. Mage Meadowbrook and Zecora (despite being a Zebra) are basically examples of what Earth Pony magic is. They cannot levitate, they cannot teleport, they can no more use magic the way Unicorns do than they can fly the way Pegusai can. If they could, it would trivialize Unicorns, because then said Earth Ponies would basically have their powers as well as the gifts naturally inherent to Earth Ponies.
Even the official RPG gives earth ponies extra strength and endurance above the other types.
I believe Earth Ponies are able to perform certain conjuration spells, provided they have either the right tools, skills, and formulas.
Well Lauren Faust herself said all ponies had magic. Earth pony magic basically makes them stronger and healthier and better with growing crops and stuff. A unicorn or pegasus could be farmers, but an Earth Pony farmer of equal skill or talent would grow better. Their magic is passive instead of activated.
Indeed. Even a pegasus as stunted as Scootaloo can stand on clouds. There’s really no excuse at this point.
Celestia confirmed in the S4 finale that earth ponies have an innate magic that enhances their strength.
The show has just never drawn particular attention to it. I, too, would like to see the show display their strength and confirm that it is an earth pony thing and not just a cartoon gag.
Earth pony magic, hm? I wonder if they’re ever going to acknowledge that. We have yet to see a non-earth pony try it and fail to show it. If it’s just alchemy anypony can do, it’s not earth pony-specific.

Agreed. I would love it if Luna popped up and said “well, technically I was sealed in the moon for 834 years. The ponies who wrote that book probably just felt that didn’t roll off the tongue quite as well.”
I think the “1000 years” thing has become a poetry gag in the series.
My problem with that kind of argument is that this isn’t just a small mixup; she was supposed to be an Eastern Unicorn, but ended up an Earth Pony from southern Equestria. Even if we assume real life history is wrong at times, the show does nothing to draw attention to the differences, as if the writers actually forgot they had established that bit of lore entirely, and they probably did just that.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind Meadowbrook being an Earth Pony, it’s a nice revelation into Earth Pony magic (which Zecora apparently already makes use of), but they still didn’t do a good job of covering their tracks on this one.
Only Nightmare Moon and King Sombra were said to be 1000 years ago, and rounding to 1000 would be pretty natural even if the events happened years off of 1000.
As for how that misconception started, well, there may have been a lot of uppity tribist unicorns quietly convinced that any well-known magic user couldn’t be some simple Earth pony.
I can accept this, actually. It’s completely ridiculous, since pegasi are responsible for the weather. Perhaps she just found a new or unique way to harness that ability.
