Even though this is duckery and I should feel bad to chip in, I find it important enough to mention on such occasions: I owe it to all my Arab feminist, Iranian oppositional, Iraqi atheist, Muslim-raised women friends to note that American and European liberals tend to treat the Hijab as a symbol of inclusion, but it is the opposite. Those friends of mine fought hard to never have to wear the Hijab again, most had to leave their countries and abandon their families. I find it utterly disrespectful by Westerners to parade around the Hijab as some kind of symbol of a progressive, open society, when it really is the opposite, the symbol of patriarchal oppression of female sexuality.
tl;dr I get salty over liberal apologism for women veiling because I know women who risked their lives not wearing it.
Nobody is screaming or yelling in that thread, despite “religion”. So I don’t think the inclusion of religion per se, should be an issue. It all comes down to whether the joke was funny or not. And OP’s joke is…well…it’s kinda sorta funny maybe, but it definitely is just looking for trouble.
I could try make halal jokes that would have much less controversy using babushka Glim.
I could put a caption that says “tfw you miss suhoor during ramadhan” or “when someone stole your good sandals after jumah prayers” but given that this board has only like, five muslims at max, the jokes would fly over everybody’s head.
You see, ppl make things related to something, no matter what, so I personally don’t mind if you put politics into puppy videos. Oh, and that is also why the Portrayed By Spongebob meme can be funny sometimes.
Without getting into this duckery, I’ll just point out that whoever thinks that a character having a single trait (sexuality, religion, gender, whatever) is automatically more interesting solely because of it, that’s pretty shallow.
By that, I mean, using one or more of the aforementioned traits as a substitute defining attribute to their personality as a whole, if that makes any sense.
@tehwatever
Yes… because bringing religion into an unrelated topic never leads to anything bad… ever… Now excuse me while I bring politics into a thread about cute little puppies. I’ll be equally confused when people get mad. Maybe I’ll even stand up on a soapbox and tell people they are being unreasonable and to not be like that. Change my avatar to something obviously non-controversial too.
@ArmadilloEater
I’m actually rather confuddled by people who sees the inclusion of religion to automatically ruins a thing. I remember back in 2013 where everybody on the internet was outraged whenever they see mlp crossover fanart or ponified fanart. They argue “why do bronies keep shoving ponies in our stuff” or “bronies ruins X”
Don’t be like that. Granted, OP has low taste in jokes.
Good thing the hijab pony (my current profile pic as of the time of commenting) only showed up for a split second at a time and doesn’t have any speaking role, otherwise there’d have been a storm of feces on this board and other ones.
@The Smiling Pony
Sí señor. De momento vivo yo en españa. There are “gitanos” or “romani” or more commonly referred to as gypsies living here in Mediterranean europe. There are ALSO, Moroccans here. Moroccan women especially old (muslim) ones wear their headscarves. Gitano women especially old (non-muslim ones) ALSO wear headscarvses.
Point being: muslim women wearing headscarves is common knowledge nowadays, because we see them a LOT, even in pop media and culture. other ones? not so much. babushka, gitano women, traditional jewish women, african women, they’re less out there than hijabis.
In the US media alone, they already have a hijabi creating a superhero, being in olympics or co-organizing woman’s march (doesn’t matter how you feel about sjws or feminism, point is hijabis get more coverage than their non-muslim counterpart)
So I could somewhat forgive any idiot who ignorantly assumes headscarves to exclusively be a muslim thing. Why? because they rarely are ever exposed to non-muslim-headscarf-wearing women.
