@Background Pony #597B
this reminds me of this star trek episode with commander data.
at which point is something a living being?
is something not a living being just because it is made of electronic?
at the end it is just too easy to say its made out of electronic or magic that is why it is not a real living being.
there are a few basic traits that define what a living being is.
and i think this clones are having this traits.
they are inteligent, can feel, have fear, and pretty much behave like every other living being.
especially this evil twilight seems pretty smart.
and apparently many bronies and fans already found their fav villain in her.
so i have a pretty hard time to not see her as a living being and i feel kind of bad for her.
“You cursed tree! Look what you’ve done! I’m melting! melting! Oh, what a world! What a world! Who would have thought a overgrown weed like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? Oooooh, look out! I’m going! Oooooh! Ooooooh!”
Christ, Hasbro! First you give the ponies creepy, HotDiggedyDemon-esque facial expressions in S6, and now in this episode you pull a Raiders of the Lost Ark reference? Are you trying to scare away your target audience or something?

Why would it let Starlight use its power in the first place?
It may not have recognized the danger when she first tapped into it to activate the time loop (even here it was slow to react to the evil Mane 6, they each had to touch it first), and from there the only way to stop the loop was for Starlight to give up. Its the living spirit of the land, but it may not have conventional intelligence.
Or, it may have been counting on Twilight to use the events to redeem Starlight, and thus chose not to intervene until that had happened. The Tree’s main goal seems to always be to expand the influence of the magic of friendship and gain allies, and Starlight is a powerful ally.
