If this special was supposed to be depicting a relationship upgrade for the two then it left me really disappointed, even angry with how it was handled.
Mainly the whole fight between Rarity and Applejack might have been more meaningful if anything in the past specials or movies indicated this version of them had a friendship any deeper than their friendship with the rest of the group. With a lack of that the whole jealousy thing seems to come out of nowhere. That everyone aside from Sunset and Human Twilight have had so little development as characters compared to their pony versions isn’t an excuse to spring so much on us so suddenly after so much time of nothing but a regular friendship. Especially given Rarity as a pony has been one of the few of the Mane Six long established to be into males.
Due to that and other aspects this special just ended up feeling really awkward to me rather than sweet (or romantic) with how out of left field the lesbian undertones were, but I fear this fandom’s obsession with lesbian ships is going to lead them to overlook this. Not to mention how this specials’ depiction of the pair may color any interactions they have in the future, reducing them to shipping interpretations.
And if none of this was supposed to be depicting lesbian undertones, then I consider it rather misleading on the part of the animators and writers.

I know that. I even agreed with you. Read my other post where I specifically said that I prefer seeing canon shipping in Equestria Girls (at least in regards to the main cast) compared to Friendship is Magic.
It’s not FiM though. It’s EqG. And relationships between the main characters works way better in EqG than in FiM. The characters are younger, they’ve known each other for less time, and frankly their personalities are different, which means Rarity and Applejack are more compatible as a couple here than they are in FiM.

I didn’t say or pretend that it only understands platonic relationships. I even like some of the canon ships that were in MLP. I just really like how the show revolves mostly around friendship and prefer that the Mane 6 didn’t get into romantic relationships in FiM.
@mjangelvortex
FiM is the one with 2 weddings and most amount of ships getting canon. Is a bit too late to suddenly pretend that it only understand platonic relationships.

It’s not hypocritical. I just prefer seeing romantic subplots with human characters. Plus, like Seraph said, EQG dabbled with romantic subplots with the main cast from the get go whereas MLP didn’t. I also think the setting/tone/genre that EQG is in feels a bit more fitting for romance compared to MLP. EQG is a magical girl show aimed at teens and preteens and those tend to have more romance in them compared to a slice of life show (with bits of adventure once in a blue moon) aimed at a younger audience.
@Lord Seraph
That would be hypocritical. Why would you think pony6 can’t have boyfriends but EQG can have some? How is Rarity/Applejack in EQG more meaningfull and less divisive than Fluttershy returning feelings for Discord? Beside, it would be awkward if RariJack was canon in EQG but they would remain single and without any special bond in FiM. You can’t go cherry pick greenlit shippings. Mane6 are either sacred for non shipping or all of them are allowed for status quo break romance.
