Oh, the actual Yellow Pages and its semi-official local phone company variants are long extinct in the wild, thanks not only to the near-100% saturation of web access and landlineless cell users, but also to the breakup of the small number of phone old school monopolies. These things are pure advertising wank playing to a seriously obsolete marketing aesthetic.
 
I know I’ve seen other people bitching about them online, though; man, I’m-a hafta investigate this garbage now.

Where I live physical phonebooks are pretty much extinct — they’re online.
 
I’ve only seen a few — one that we had a million years ago (hence I only vaguely remember it, I was too young), and like one or two since, in public places.

…Okay, this is just bothering me now– I don’t know where y’all are from, but do you honestly not experience in your neck of the woods the annual scourge of part-time delivery goons being hired by clueless advertisers to distribute millions of unsolicited and unwanted “yellow page” phonebooks by dropping them at the base of every mailbox in the land (because it’s a violation of federal law to actually put them in the mailbox)? It’s such a universally known and loathed event around here that grocery and department stores will rent temporary recycling dumpsters with huge PLEASE PLACE PHONEBOOKS HERE FOR RECYCLING! signs on them just to keep their actual store dumpsters from being clotted full up with the damn things.
 
I collect them by the dozens to use as target shooting and archery backstops, then recycle them. Absolutely nobody minds having them picked up and carried off; I have literally had several people see me picking the things up and applaud me from their front porches.

It was one of the early episodes. I think they did it along with the the ‘can you make a car bulletproof by armoring it with phonebooks’ myth (for small arms you can, yes), and the ‘how impossible is it to pull two phonebooks whose pages have been alternated together’ one (Needed a tank to pull them apart due to the absurd coefficient of friction created)

But Mythbusters already showed how even the average person can rip a phonebook in half, if they know the method. (Basically push it together a bit so the pages are in an arch, then pull it through at the middle. Each page starts to rip individually, and when a rip has started the paper has lost pretty much all its strength.)
