I have a small heacanon that Celestia and Luna are terrible in direct combat, Celestia because she’s severely out of practice and Luna because nobody is willing to say to her face she’s bad at it. Whenever they encounter a problem that they can’t brute force their way through they crumple quickly. Rather, they are excellent on the logistical side of warfare, like supplies and delegating command, and are stellar diplomats, enough that they can typically maneuver around most conflicts.
 
From there, Cadande is fairly competent thanks to Shining Armor insisting on giving her unicorn and Pegasi combat training, maybe even justifying it as a date. And Twilight Sparkle is Twilight Sparkle, and one day Flurry Heart will surpass them all.

The show has not said even once that Alicorns are not immortal. And the closest thing the staff has said to such a thing is the incredibly vague “Twilight will not outlive her friends” which can mean any number of things (including that Celestia and Luna are some of her friends so she will never outlive them).

Because they were “captured by plants” in season 4? Twilight Sparkle was also almost captured by the plants and had to be rescued by her friends. And those plants were created by Discord which is way beyond the level of even an Alicorn. I don’t count anything IDW comes up with.

Unrealistic. If Luna got assaulted Sugar would be banished to Tartarus. Not to mention Sugar would realistically not win. She’s just an earth pony, so the ending is not lore friendly.
