I wonder how often she keeps getting distracted by the big shiny castle on the side of the mountain, because even at night it catches the moon’s light and can be seen for miles…

I agree. There’s so many different wing and antenna designs to consider when making a moth pony as well as the amount of fluff to add onto their bodies (some moths aren’t fluffy, some have a little bit of fluff on certain parts of their bodies, and others are completely fluffy all over). Add in the fact that some people make Mothlings and you have yet another variety of moth pony to consider.
@mjangelvortex
This pretty true for the most part. A lot of people will give mothponies regardless of gender fluffy antennae to make them appear more like the typical image of a moth, and separate them from others. On a lot of occasions, though, people will give mothponies antennae of the moth said character is based on, and sometimes even omit the antennae all together. Remember, not all male moths have fluffy antennae; that more or so a quirk of Silkmoths/Giant Moths and other similar families and suborders of moths.
More often than not, most moths have typical bug antennae, or very little fluff at all. I say “most moths” cause that also includes primitive moths, micro moths, flannel moths, fungus moths; you know, all those tiny moths that you can spot nearly everwhere all of the time. Probably the literal biggest example of this would be the Sphingidae family of moths (Hawk Moths). None of the moths in this family have fluffy antennae, but they do have antennae that is different enough to separate them from other insects, this being the thick and long antennae most commonly found on them. Hexferry is a good example of this design. Since she’s based off Death’s Head Hawk Moth, she doesn’t have fluffy antennae.
It really comes down to personal preference, whether you want to be accurate to the moth it’s based on, or if you want to sway more toward the typical idea of a moth. It’s one of the many things that makes designing mothpony characters so enjoyable in my opinion.

I like this idea. Mothponies being able to learn so much about each other by simply touching antennae. I could also see this as a pretty good alternative to whispering. They just touch antennae to pass secrets to one another. It’s twice as stealthy as just saying words real quietly.
@Daneasaur
But for another answer, I think most people draw moths and moth ponies with fluffy antenna (regardless if the character is male or female) to make them look different from other insects like butterflies.

Not ones this size that can think, not to mention defend themselves: they have soldiers who have poisonous wings. They’re very peaceful but they WILL fight to defend themselves :D
