This is something that I too can very well appreciate. I previously handwaved the H&H gift thing, the EQG special heart-iris-out thing, and other such things as more “best friends” stuff since it didn’t seem realistic to me that this show would actually be able to go all the way like this, but now I think on it all very differently.

You know, for being largely in the background, does anyone else love how Lyra and Bon Bon’s relationship progressed over the series?
 
It wasn’t just like they were randomly thrown in just to have a relationship. We first met them just as background ponies who hung out together a lot by sheer coincidence of their color schemes going together well. Then we got to see them interact together more. Then come Slice of Life and onwards, we start getting the sense that maybe they’re a little more than best friends, which continued through other points in the series such as them giving gifts to each other for Hearts and Hooves Day, while all the other couples shown that montage were straight. And then this.
 
Point is, Lyra and Bon Bon being together didn’t feel forced. It didn’t feel out-of-the-blue. It didn’t feel like some “look, a gay couple, give us points!” kind of shoehorned thing. It felt like a natural progression of their character arcs. It felt genuine. It felt like real love.
 
And that’s just the way it should be.
