The reason the villains weren’t going to kill any of the characters is because they were toying with them.

Once they had victory, death tolls would certainly rise.

Tirek: Completely won until the mane 6 returned. Drained ponies he defeats. Total deaths Zero
Chrysalis: Completely won until Starlight convinced Chrysalis’ entire army to mutiny. Harvests ponies she defeats. Total deaths Zero.
Cozy: Even if she wins, she just subjugates/throws opposition/threats in Tartarus. Total deaths Zero.
Sombra: Simply changes opposition into mindless slaves or traps them in easily escapable prisons. Total deaths Zero.

Tirek, Chrysalis and Cozy: Captured like all threats except Twilight. Instead of harvesting their love, draining their power or killing them. They left them to easily escape. Total deaths Zero.

There’s absolutely no reason to not kill your threats or at least ensure they’re unable to escape/fight back. They already know leaving them alive is stupid.
The villains “toying” with their enemies that have already beaten them once is

If the villains are going to be written to never actually kill off any character, and the heroes will always be written to prevail against them, why did they need to be written to be condemned to turning to stone for the rest of eternity? Tartarus was just fine for them.

They didn’t need to. It was just bad writing.

Most evil mares do pity their prey too much.

Well, some real-life bad men have been thankfully stupid enough to let enemies and eyewitnesses get away alive, but yes, it’s not something to bet on.

Sure some have, but I’d say the grand majority, as in over 95% had the bare cognitive function to ascertain that leaving their threats/people who know they’re a villain, alive would be an extremely asinine choice and promptly killed said individuals :)

If they have to be defeated for the sake of the story, how would do so in a way that’s satisfactory?

I thought it was already made clear. Spike, Rarity and the geese all put up more of a fight, I want the same from the guards that are literally trained to fight. I’m fine with the guards losing. Just make them actually pressure her. Have the guards utilize some sort of formation, have them use a shield breaker spell by combining their powers into one spell, have the pegasi ponies perform aerial assaults while the earth ponies charge with spears and arrows. Have Cozy forced to target them as legitimate threats and port them away rather than just brushing them away like trash.

I mean when Spike and the geese chase Cozy around easily it just makes me ask: “Why isn’t she just using her invulnerability shield that worked so well before?“

They most likely were only posted around the perimeter of the building, wouldn’t want the princess to become powerless when trying to raise the sun and moon, you also wouldn’t want to stop a unicorn inside the building from using their telekinesis… Plus, even if they were placed inside the building, they were probably overwhelmed by the sheer amount of power she possesses… Like trying to use a thin piece of rubber insulation to stop a lightning bolt.

There’s a bunch of ways to be better prepared, flawless teamwork, strategic plans, traps (this is THEIR TURF), training harder, better weaponry? Stop me whenever I could literally come up with a paragraph of ideas so they aren’t consistently useless. We didn’t see them put up a fight any more than we saw the guards in Season 1 rush Nightmare Moon and get knocked away by her lightning spell while she laughed at their pathetic attempts, Cozy absolutely toyed with them. They saw she had an invulnerable shield and bum rushed her just like season 1.

-Rarity isn’t even a combatant but she held off Chysalis for a while
-Spike at that age isn’t a combatant, but he pressured Cozy who had a power up

Cuz giving them shit’s kind of a tradition at this point, tbh.

To be fair with charging, perhaps trying to fire magic bolts at a closer range generally helps you do more damage, especially if you’re not overly powerful.

I wouldn’t say they’re really useless though, like some people would, because seriously, everyone has to sleep sometime.

They just get Worfed by stronger foes, as you said.

To be fair, Discord didn’t tell anyone that Cozy was an alicorn. Twilight anticipated Tirek and Chrysalis by sending the Pillars and Starlight after them and Cadence, Shining, and Flurry being the last line of defense but no one expected Cozy to be an alicorn which caught everyone off guard.

Whether Cozy is an alicorn, ursa major or element of evil those guards should be somewhat prepared. They literally serve no purpose if Celesta and Luna would have to just end up defending themselves everytime a threat comes.

Fair points, but what would you have them do if retreat wasn’t an option?

The Mane Six also charged the villains with no more plan, so why are we only complaining about the guards doing it?

And why did Cozy portal them away as opposed to blasting them? She had no qualms blasting the mane characters later?

Yee, it’s a tad unfulfilling to not know every detail, but I guess it’s up for us to decide and what-not. Which is perfect, because I sincerely believe she’s just a true-blue, natural born freak. Not a single wrongdoing done to her, no great tragedy or incident that gave her a grim view of the world or whatever… Just a filly that loves the crackle of her latest orphanage fire, and the satisfaction of beating anyone in her way with sheer, irrestistable, overwhelming force.

I still hate that we got absolutely zero background or explanation on why a filly is a top-tier goddamn supervillain.
If this was a darker and/or more cynical show I would just roll with it, but here it makes no sense when the next worst filly was simply bullying the Cutie mark Crusaders in her heyday.

That being said, Cozy Glow is definitely one of the best evil kids ever, and I love the way she was ‘dancing’ and taunting the guards here. I don’t blame her coolness for the writers’ unwillingness to explain her existence.

WHY IS THIS SO HYPE?! Watching Cozy so effortlessly dunk on some random guards just makes me beam too much, man, l-like - can we just focus on her smile as well?! It’s sickening how much of a high she’s getting from just literally blinking them away. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’d have sent them to a volcano if it was close enough, like go-lly!

God… I love Cozy too much. Anyone who thinks she needed to be redeemed like some sissy can shove it, Cozy is the embodiment of all evil and that’s why I love her. ^^
