The reason the villains weren’t going to kill any of the characters is because they were toying with them.Once they had victory, death tolls would certainly rise.
just bad writing.
If the villains are going to be written to never actually kill off any character, and the heroes will always be written to prevail against them, why did they need to be written to be condemned to turning to stone for the rest of eternity? Tartarus was just fine for them.

Well, some real-life bad men have been thankfully stupid enough to let enemies and eyewitnesses get away alive, but yes, it’s not something to bet on.

Yes better teamwork, traps would help, but there’s a difference between saying they can be better than stating realistically how they can be better. I admit you give some examples, but they were still overpowered until reinforcements arrived. If they have to be defeated for the sake of the story, how would do so in a way that’s satisfactory?
They just get Worfed by stronger foes, as you said.

To be fair, Discord didn’t tell anyone that Cozy was an alicorn. Twilight anticipated Tirek and Chrysalis by sending the Pillars and Starlight after them and Cadence, Shining, and Flurry being the last line of defense but no one expected Cozy to be an alicorn which caught everyone off guard.
I love how the guards have a low IQ… “Our magic attack beams didn’t do anything, I’m sure charging into her will make a difference”.
Also, literally what was charging supposed to do against an aerial opponent?
