I recently wondered how wedding rings would work for non-unicorns (as we saw in Canterlot Wedding) and came up with idea that ponies can have their own traditions with necklace for example. So maybe Big Mac has such tradition and this is the most natural way for him. Maybe only Canterlot unicorns use rings on horns?

True. But the scene might have looked awkward with him trying to put it on her horn with his big hooves. The animators can kinda cheat a little bit with the necklace since you can’t really see him fasten it.
