Call it the “sunk cost fallacy,” if you’d like, where they feel they can’t give up on someone because they care, no matter how slowly they change ala continental drift. …I’m not sure how Chrysalis would realistically be much better in that regard, considering, even if it had got off the ground, if you were giving it proper focus, due to their personality similarities (pride, sadism, impatience), as opposed to skipping to a timeskip of “after reform.”

I think one of the reasons people object to the ending is because the Three were more interesting to watch. Seeing these three slowly realize that they value their friendship would have been a much more interesting plot than what we got.  
As to reformations in general, I think the real reasons they became objectionable is because many times it felt like all they did was flick a switch and they were suddenly “good.” Watching it happen over a number of episodes would have been a good change of pace.

Discord being a trickster mentor was something that he never learned not to do. He’d done it in S4, S7, multiple times in S8 counting BGE… so S9 was when it finally backfired on him.
 
Discord and Chrysalis are really rather similar, in that they have big self-destructive tendencies, with their pride and all, just one reformed, the other didn’t.
 
…they both share the trait of being sadistic, in contrast to Starlight in general (she only really approached that mindset when she’s being outright vengeful, in her villainous days). Discord enjoyed bullying others even post-reformation, and Chrysalis was taking sadistic glee in attacking a city.

I think its worth noting that Chrysalis almost accepted Starlight’s hoof and her expression showed that she was actually thinking about it. Its a shame that they just let her fly off instead of capturing her and further trying to reform her.

I still can’t help but feel curious to see the “bad” storytelling unfolding instead.

Chrysalis was made as a perfect foil to Starlight, down to the framing of their offered redemption. I honestly would’ve liked to see Chrssy get redeemed, but my love for good storytelling trumps that any day.

And i think it should be “Reformed” not redeemed
