Call it the "sunk cost fallacy," if you'd like, where they feel they can't give up on someone because they care, no matter how slowly they change ala continental drift. ...I'm not sure how Chrysalis would realistically be much better in that regard, considering, even if it had got off the ground, if you were giving it proper focus, due to their personality similarities (pride, sadism, impatience), as opposed to skipping to a timeskip of "after reform."
