Yeah, it’s really strange the ponies don’t have a good army despise having experiences with many enemies as the draconequus, the changelings, the Storm Empire, etc.
 
I mean, unicorns have magic, pegasus can control the weather (making them the most powerful part) and earth ponies are strong and of course the princess can control the sun and the moon.
 
Equestria as a setting has too many problems when trying to form epic stories, it does not take all the implications that the existence of various elements of said world entails, which is fine as it is a slice of life with a peculiar world but when it tries to be epic, it is like Wonderland, the writers just don’t want to take all the implications of that world to maintain a status quo which is what made the series shine in the first place.

Except Hobbits have been shown to be very effective warriors when pressed. Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin. Even going as far back as Bullroarer Took. In the book version of Return of the King, the Hobbits were able to fight off Saruman’s army of marauders during the Scouring of the Shire. And during the War in the North against Angmar in LOTR the Shire sent a force of archers to fight alongside the Dunedain and the Elves against the Witch King’s armies. Even minor Hobbit characters such as Farmer Maggot have been shown to be badass in their own right.
 
Ponies on the other hand despite their magic and other abilities, still don’t have any real military capabilities. They pale as warriors compared to most human cultures and other fantasy races. Yes, they are more peaceful, but they’ve had warriors in the past. The Pegasi were renowned as warriors(although we never do see them in action). And apparently the Pillars of Equestria were effective fighters.
 
But I think the main reason is bipeds like us have the ability to craft and wield weapons, thus opening up a larger range of possibilities for combat. While ponies can obviously craft things, their ability to actually wield weapons is limited. Humans over the centuries kept craft more advanced and powerful weapons, while pony military technology remained practically the same.

That’s because Equestria is a peaceful society. To expect them to be warriors is to expect Hobbits or Smurfs to be warriors.

Kind of hard to take ponies prancing about in armor seriously to begin with. But the complete failure of the royal guards throughout the show just makes it worse. With the exception of Tempest Shadow ponies in general have not been shown to be all that impressive warriors.

I know and we like to make them look more awesome. But the show kept telling us that we’re only setting ourselves up for disappointment with that train of thought.

For being a concept that comes in the wrong times thanks to 2020 and Hasbro’s bipolarity, it had to go through extreme editing processes, as can be seen in the arc of the cats that all news of this indicated that the entire saga had to be remade and with a great saturation of characters. It would be a great miracle if that has at least a decent ending and it’s already a great victory if it turns out to be better than “ending of the end”.

The final 2 comics are gonna be a disappointment calling it now.

I think it is a picture of the city without the panels in the artwork, as it is easier to depict the background image as a whole before the panels are put in place. But here it looks like only the lower part is put together, because on the upper part it seems that the panels were there to hide irregularities. In any case, Pencils had made Canterlot bigger and more diverse than before, by continuing up the track laid out by the G4 movie from October 2017 and Plainoasiss design from August 2017. At least Pencils showed that parts of the city are on different levels just like in the movie - and, when I think about it - Plainoasis shown the same thing. Was he inspired by trailers about the movie when he made his amazing work of art?   Plainoasiss artwork showcasing Canterlot may have become as canon as the show, thanks to the FiM # 101. Especially # 2166356, # 1906406, # 1866469, # 1596988, # 1542593, # 1506617 and # 1472841 here in Derpibooru. I would not be surprised if Pencils were to use # 2121223 showing the royal sisters as statues in a park erected over the city. Ponies like statues very much, and since these have gone off, it is guaranteed that there are many statues after them in memory of them. We saw Pencils make a statue in ice of them in an early issue.
 
Fantastic. Pencils have left their mark - and drawn others into this honor. Perhaps his greatest masterpiece.

The background is great but i think the backgroud should have been their own double page instead of being the background of the panels because the background had a lot of details that becomes into into something distracting instead of something that contributes to the visual narrative of a comic.
 
Now i am curious if there’s a version of that city without the panels at least in the pencil artwork before the coloring and edition.

I love what Pencils had done with the background, these two pages are like one big scenery picture of Canterlot. Could recognize something from Scandinavia … the picture with Stygian shows that Pencils had probably been in the Stockholm library, it is not surprising because there is daily ferry traffic between Stockholm and Turku / Helsinki. Some of the buildings are inspired by historic buildings in several countries, especially in Northern Europe - so Pencils had probably looted a library to find inspiration from existing buildings to make these buildings in Canterlot. From what the city looked like from upstairs, it seems that he has used Plainoasis`s design on Canterlot in his work. Then Plainoasis - and us - can thank Pencils for making “his” Canterlot canon. And the best part is that Pencils has shown only a small part of the whole city that is bigger than in the show (we first saw how big the city was after it was laid in ruins in S9 …).
 
For that, we should be grateful. His Pinkie / Cheese in Canterlot story has so far been the highlight of S10, something we all really appreciated, from fans to the one fan who was lucky enough to make his mark on the world of ponies. Even if Pencils was forced to stop making G4 comics at the IDW, we should wish him luck with future projects within the Ponyverse.

I did mention the Storm King invasion. I’m a little more forgiving of Discord’s attack, because you know, he can warp all of reality. But the others just show what a joke Equestria’s military is. From the Wonderbolts to the Canterlot guard, Equestria has a completely useless military at its disposal. Which I guess kind of makes sense since they rely so heavily on magic and the princesses, and also after Nightmare Moon they seem to have had peace for over a thousand years.
 
But with all the threats on Canterlots borders such as the Changelings, the Dragons, and the Storm King you’d think they’d invest in a stronger defense. But it seems Equestria’s “army” is purely ceremonial(they can’t even handle Celestia’s pet bird) and they rely entirely on Celestia and the other princesses for protection. Meaning any real threat is going to completely bull doze them once the princesses are taken out.
 
I don’t believe in turning Equestria into a completely militarized society. But it needs a real military. To quote an old Roman proverb-If you want peace, prepare for war.

For being a kingdom that has been invaded many times, i am really surprised they don’t have a really extremist military force.
