They basically can’t take full control no matter what they do. The kitsune can only control Twilight when she sleeps, so no matter what Twilight will eventually wake up. The shadow pony can’t control Twilight’s movements at all: she only has control over sensations felt by Twilight, like if the shadow pony touches something Twilight feels that too or if the shadow pony gets aroused Twilight will spontaneously feel it too :D

are very weird and very varied. They tend to be ironic in some way, like Twilight always thinks she’s in full control and knows what’s going on, so her curse is one she doesn’t know about that messes with her in a way to mess her up and embarrass her :D

Shadow ponies can’t control their hosts. They’re technically in the pony’s shadow, not in the pony themselves. It’s actually their biggest weakness: the stronger the shadow the stronger they are. If Twilight is in pitch darkness the shadow pony can’t act, but under bright light the shadow pony can be strong enough to actually touch the physical world herself. Under multiple lights, there are multiple shadow ponies :P
