You both bring up very good points. Family Guy these days seems to be mostly pointless dribble (the OJ Simpson one is what shut me off from the show), but it has shown that it can still have some very good gems from time to time (the bank vault one is my absolute favorite episode).
Sadly, I still think they find it easier to have pointless rape jokes and the whole of a Conway Twitty song, so I really doubt I’ll become the avid viewer I once was.
i would have never said this 6 or so years ago, but American Dad, though still with faults, is a good show
Family Guy is like a person who knows how to tread for a while but constantly keeps drowning and they have a determined, yet arrogantly idiotic lifeguard that shows up to rouse their nearly braindead body and thow it back in.
Playing a tad devil’s advocate, later seasons of FG, had some episodes that had a number of call outs on character’s behaviors, hypocrisy, and self-righteous attitudes a number of times. While it went to status quo later, it still had some moments on the core characters getting their call outs:
Quagmire telling off Brian
Meg as a released convict and handling everyone who gave her grief
Brian, even though beaten by Quagmire for unknowingly slept with his dad who had a sex change operation, got the last word
Meg, finally calling out her family’s BS and verbally ripped each one to the point they started turning on each other
Brian, locked in a bank vault with Stewie, admitted that he contemplated on suicide
Rush Limbaugh, of all people, as well as Lois, telling Brian isn’t really a conservative or much of a liberal, just someone who is against the current system in power.
Will admit the cutaway gags loss me after a while, but FG does have some highs even though it has become stale to me as does the Simpsons (where do you think the term “Franderized” came from). Guess this was why I turned my attention to American Dad more, since it has a better story structure and the characters while flawed, are still relatable:
Stan <- Peter
Francine <- Lois
Steve is waaaay better than Chris
Hayley is less of a butt monkey than Meg
Roger probably has done more damage to mankind during his 60+ year stay than Stewie

Eh, I have to admit the last few Ep, were kinda meh in my opinion ( Yes I realize I just put a hate on Se3 target on this comment but what ever. I still liked Se3 for the most part ). The only really good Episode I can think of for this Season was Simon and Marcy. Maybe it will get better near the end of the Season.
