My argument (which I’M hoping to derail this thread with into something more interesting) is that MLP doesn’t really have anything over these children’s shows.

I’ve heard every argument, and I don’t think any of them hold water.
 
Twilight isn’t going to overshadow all of her friends, we know that because all of the other characters are all but confirmed to get their own focus. She’s not suddenly overpowered, because even as an alicorn there are still things she can’t do. She has doubts about herself, and is clearly still learning. Most importantly, she’s a strongly-defined character, which a Mary Sue by definition cannot be.

You know, when I first head about Twilicorn, my reaction was “holy shit, that’s the most awesome thing ever!” I still don’t understand what all this rage is all about.
 
I mean, sure, the dynamic has changed, but I can’t see how it’s for the worse when we’ll still have the same strong characters, great music, and quirky humor we’ve always had.

Yes, Avatar was Aang’s story, and yet they manage to make all the character in the main cast vital to the story. Even the Kyoshi warriors and the White Lotus are important. How would a slice-of-life can even pull of making a single character out of 6 main ones the only focus?

When did I ever say that the Mane 5 wouldn’t try to be Twilight’s friends? I didn’t. What I did say was that they are socially inferior to her, not that they couldn’t be friends. HOWEVER, the relationship dynamic has changed, and I believe it changed for the worse.
 
It’s a class thing, essentially.
 
Oh, and according to Celestia, Twilight IS the only one who ever does anything important.
 
And WHEN did I call Twi a Sue in this thread? I haven’t - at least not here (I did, however, use those words and justify them point-by-point in the forums).
 
Perhaps ironically, I actually have more faith in the folks at IDW to get it right than I do Meghan and the DHX staff at this point. That said, I await Season 4. The fact that at least two of the first nine episodes don’t seem to revolve around Twilight is a good sign, though.

I feel that complaint isn’t really valid because we already know that other characters are going to be getting their own focus in Season 4.

However, there is one major difference. Avatar was always Aang’s story, and it never had any pretense to being anything else. MLP:FiM, on the other hand - though the “adventure” episodes are clearly Twilight Sparkle’s story - the vast majority of the series is clearly a slice-of-life ensemble show. That’s why (save for Rarity being inadvertently shut out of S3) every season gave the major characters one or two episodes of their own where Twilight’s impact on the story was minimal to nonexistent.
 
Avatar was never slice-of-life, not even the “breather” episodes.
 
The concern, and I feel it’s a legitimate one, is that Twilicorn will be a narrative black-hole wherein the story focuses only on her, which is the absolute worst thing that could happen from a storytelling perspective. FiM has an ensemble; they need to develop it in relation to each other, not to Twilight; that’s already been done… a lot.

Well, she’s almost certainly not going to be in a top leadership position right away, that’s why she’s still learning. Celestia and Luna are still obviously the heads of state for Equestria, and that’s not going to change any time soon.
 
Cadance was a princess, but she never really got around to ruling anything until the after Season 3.
