Assuming you’re right for a moment, isn’t pure alcohol a dangerous thing to ingest because it can turn you blind? Not only that but alcohol is a worse influence on children than mercury.
liquid behaves differently when it’s in a tiny, enclosed tube with nowhere to go but up than when it’s in a wine glass
that is why wine doesn’t magically rise out of the glass (besides the fact that, as several people have stated, 13-15% alcohol behaves a lot differently than pure alcohol because a 15% alcohol solution is mostly not alcohol)
it’s like some of you get off on being completely and verifiably wrong

Wine usually contains only 13% alcohol. Liquid in thermometers is closer to 100%. Also, the type of alcohol might not be ethanol, like in wine. Some use toluene, kerosene or Isoamyl acetate, some of which you wouldn’t want to drink.
Seeing as I posted a page from the EPA about mercury and thermometers saying very specifically that “A mercury thermometer can be easily identified by the presence of a silver bulb. If the bulb is red, blue, purple, green or any other color, it is not a mercury thermometer,” I’m going to assume you’re being stupid either on purpose or because that’s just how you are.

I remember during Christmas I was holding a glass of red wine, and I don’t remember the warmth from my hand making the drink rise out of the glass.
