Nightmare’s first action on her return was to electrocute three of the Principality’s soldiers. That was the very second episode of the whole show. She has absolutely no trouble using violent oppression to get what she wants out of her subjects.

…YEAH! That’s right!… Let’s go with that… I’d never forget that myself… that’d be just dumb…

Uh, I just watched the episode again, heard the “to destroy you” line. So yeah, Celestia acted in self-defense. My bad.
Bronitarian

@AlsoSprachOdin
So celestia gives her a few days, nightmare moon takes over the world, destroys the elements or sends them god knows where, and does everything she can to destroy her because “there can only be one” doesn’t usually mean “hey it’s cool, I love to share”.

And you don’t think this is giving nightmare moon exactly what she wants? Power and the opportunity to destroy celestia?

“Fantasy world”.
Well, we are talking about Equestria, here.
Besides, I’ve screamed in pain, and I kicked the little shit who made me scream. Made him scream. Then his older sister screamed at me. None of us were seriously hurt.
And when did I ever say these things? “poor injusticed soul”, “heartless, cold tyrant”, “keep on oppressing Equestria”.

Oh, wait.

“To destroy you!”
Damn, why didn’t anyone point out this line to me? Just wanted to see me dig myself deeper here, guys? ;-)

@sigh
You say “crazy”, I simply say we can’t know the context, and that maniacal laughter does not equate madness.
Madness is slamming your skull into a stone wall, over and over and over again to make the thoughts go away.

“[…] popular culture has twisted madness in general. They make it funny, they romanticize it, or they make it exaggerated. But true mental illness is nothing to laugh at. I stayed in the Birdcage for some time, I’ve seen scary things, and I’ve become numb to a great deal, but going mad is perhaps the scariest.”

What, you think that the blast didn’t hurt at all? Is that why Celestia SCREAMED IN PAIN after being hit? Just because she was able to get back up without trouble doesn’t mean that the blast didn’t do any harm, she may have been simply able to ignore the pain and damage due to the adrenaline pumping into her at the moment, or hell, even if ONE blast didn’t do much, I’m certain that 10 more would certainly have done so.

Ah, fuck it, it doesn’t matter, continue living in your fantasy world were Luna was a poor injusticed soul and Celestia was a heartless, cold tyrant who banished her poor sister so that she could keep on oppressing Equestria, depise the fact that there is absolutely zero evidence supporting that theory aside from speculation.

“time-out period” could be a possibility. The prophecy could be a recent forgery if nothing else.
A thousand years of such extreme disagreement as to warrant moon exile, between the same two individuals, is a damn long time, though.

“Endless night” - it’s been discussed already, but I’ll summarize: There’s nothing suggesting this would happen to Equestria besides realism, and Equestria big on that; freezing the whole place over and killing all the ponies would sort of defeat the point of making ponies appreciate the night; earth ponies grow germs from rocks, for sugar’s sake, and they can probably grow greens at night too.

“terribly extreme and unjustified” - On what basis do you say this? Do you actually know for certain that Luna hadn’t tried talking it out with her sister for years before this flashback? I don’t know that she did, and you don’t know that she didn’t.
Overthrowing Celestia by force hardly means that Nightmare would necessarily be a bad ruler, it could just mean that Celestia wouldn’t step down for anything less.
AlsoSprachOdin

@Background Pony #E87B
“Severely injure”? Celestia looked like she was waking up to a Monday morning hangover.
Considering that Celestia had to resort to the Elements to deal with Nightmare, it seems that Nightmare must have been the more powerful of the two. Now, we don’t know how their defensive abilities scale up to their offensive ones, but if we assume that the defenses are such that even if the attack Nightmare hit Celestia with was the strongest she should could make under the circumstances, and Nightmare wanted to injure or kill Celestia - then it would have made more sense for her to keep laying into Celestia while she was down, instead of cackling at the moon.

And where do you get this “shoots at random citizens” from? Projection? Seriously, what indications do you have that she would do that? Even after a thousand years of isolation, the worst she did to the pony who acted like she was going to punch Nightmare was offer her a spot with the Shadow Bolts.

Let’s see… Firstly, the banishment could have been a time-out period that lasted longer than intended. Celestia could have checked up on her from time to time only to find her still angry.

Secondly, I don’t think you’re too clear on the concept of an endless night and its consequences. The sun’s kind of important to keep things warm and to let plants photosynthesise, so everything on the planet would freeze and die. Also, youkai hunt at night, and would stuff themselves with humans until they died- No, wait, wrong series.

Thirdly, Luna’s actions were terribly extreme and unjustified. She didn’t even try to negotiate either, and violently overthrowing your own sister does not make a good ruler.

this is obviously an attempt to fluster people. there is a reason it’s called bait, it’s because it is baiting a reaction and just looking at the comments the OP was successful.

Yep that shot didn’t automatically kill her powerful Alicorn sister. Severely Injured sure, but it didn’t kill her. You know, the Alicorn sister with a huge amount of magic and power at her disposal. Did I mention it was her own sister that she shot at? Her own flesh and blood and all that? Better wait a couple of days to see if she shoots at random citizens who pissed her off before we make an executive decision.
AlsoSprachOdin

@Bronitarian
I’m not suggesting Celestia should have just let Luna do whatever. What I said was that she could have given Luna a couple of days to see if the banishment was really necessary.
As for identity crises, Luna just got a name-change and make-over. “Nightmare” could conceivably have been meant as “mare of the night”, and later have come to mean a bad dream, so it might not have been a Goth phase as much as it looks.
Power-grabbing? She grew enough of a spine to challenge her sister for the Regent spot, and she was right about the “only one princess” thing: there is only one ruling princess in the present Equastria (the one on the throne), and Celestia was probably the de-facto regent back then, too.

So what’s to suggest that Nightmare would have made such a terrible princess that it would be better to isolate her for 1000 years?
  • The maniacal laugh? Judging someone on how they laugh is kinda shallow.
  • The “eternal night” thing? I’m sure that policy would have been popular with the bat-ponies at least, who seem almost extinct in modern Equestria.

    As it stands, Celestia might have just acted to protect her spot as the ruler of the land.

    @441TheSecond
    The “murder attempt” didn’t even keep Celestia down for a full minute. I’m not convinced.

Don’t worry, the “Celestia is useless, really!” brigade poured in to say that Celestia was stupid in banishing Luna because she could have like, talked to her or something. Because you can totally reason with the power-hungry tyrant who’s currently trying to kill you.
