And you could always simply ‘marry’ yourself to something even more timeless, like your nation or to the ecology! Become some omnipotent hippie space elf.

Immortality has its upsides and its downsides. But its downsides have more effect because it would be Psychologically and Emotionally painful to go through. Just think about how Celestia and Luna went through it. Living for 2000 years… and they have watched and seen their subjects, friends, and loved ones pass away.
 
Being given Immortality has its severe consequences… And more than likely will stick to you.. forever.

What is it with people mixing up the words immortal and invulnerable. Immortal just means you will not die of old age, Invulnerable means you cannot be harmed by any outside force.

I don’t follow your logic. Wouldn’t frequent imprisonment be a sign of complete immortality? It would imply that, since they can’t be killed, their enemies have to settle for the next best thing

Speaking of which, maybe we’re all immortals in a dead universe, imagining this world in its entirety, and after dying we’ll just go back to imagining life?

tl;dr: complete immortality is bad and boring, though if you’re perpetuum mobile as well you can just imagine your own universe when this one meets its end. Incomplete immortality (no senescence, no loss of function, regeneration of things but still can be killed or commit suicide if thorough enough) is awesome though.

As some who has had a near death experience my reaction would be similar to the second one.

Since others have handled your first point, I’ll handle the second. While ‘immortal’ literally means “not susceptible to death”, it is quite commonly used to mean “not susceptible to old age or disease; still kill-able”, and many mythologies have examples of gods or goddesses being slain (Egypt: Osiris; Norse: Baldr; Shinto: Uke Mochi; the list goes on)

Also, in real life, someone among your friends and family is always going to be the last to die, sometimes by decades. No friends can replace the ones we’ve left behind, but it’s important to not live in isolation. It’s all the more reason to simply enjoy the moment for what it is. :)

It is not the fear which makes the 20 year old more mature in my eys. It is her concern about her friends and family. That she seems to think one or two steps ahead. The other is more selfish, at least with this kind of phrasing.  
Probably most would react like the second one, at first, but sooner or later they would realize that it is course as well as a blessing to life forever.
 
(Also it is more like that Celestia and Luna aren’t really immortal, like vampires or elf aren’t really immortal. Which means the can’t die of old age, because they aren’t really aging, the just stay young and healthy, (probably immune to many illnesses too) but they can be wounded and killed like almost everybody else.)
