Totally agree with you. Other examples of that from this fandom that bug me:
 
Turning Shining Armor or any other character into a genocidal racist who wants to wipe out all Changelings (this is WAY too common).  
Making Shining Armor a douchebag who cheats on Cadance so that the author can ship Cadance with another character.

Eh, Ron the Death Eater type portrayals are always one of my pet peeves. I never liked it when it turned Celestia int Tyrantlestia, Pinkie into Pinkamena, etc., especially when those ideas somehow end up as popular fanon. Especially when it comes to brainwashing; it’s something forced upon someone that takes away their agency. But, I think a lot of the points have been made.
