To be fair, “Shy Away” works given that the “Shy Away” character runs away a lot (and the enemy versions will frequently run away from the battle as well).

And yeah, Birdo’s name is also particularly surprising, considering that the credits of Super Mario Bros. 2 swapped the names of Birdo and Ostro and this wasn’t corrected until the Super Mario Advance version years later…

And “Bloober” at least has the excuse that that’s how the name had always been translated until Paper Mario, which is when they started calling them “Bloopers” instead (though Mario Party 3 had the “Deep Bloober Sea,” which was the last time the “Bloober” name would come up).

That to, although I feel that will only be necessary if Nintendo wants to do another Prima Guild.

Maybe there isn’t enough demand for the game, (despite the many many fans the game has) or maybe Square/Enix or Nintendo don’t care to make one…

@Jarkes
Word is the localizer/translator for the game, wasn’t aware of the American names for alot of Mario enemies/characters. Hence why the “Beezo” is called “Shy Away,” why the Cheep-Cheeps are called something else, as well as the Bullet-Bill canons being renamed to, and such.
Heck, I’m amazed he got Birdo’s name right. (Considering Birdo’s only prior appearances before SMRPG were in SMB2 & “Wario’s Woods.”)

If Nintendo can remake both “Ocarina of Time” and “Majorsa’s Mask”, they can damn well do a remake of “SMRPG:Seven Stars” if a direct port isn’t capable.

I don’t know why neither Nintendo or Square haven’t even got on top of that. That’ll make a absolute killing in the sales, especially for the New 3DS. Just imagine SMRPG is remade from scratch, all the bugs are fixed to help reach 100% completion, doesn’t have to be HD just a tad more vivid graphics, and added new content. Make a promotional video on YouTube for those who own the New 3DS will get a 50% discount for download for a limited time and BAM! Nintendo will be FOOLS if they don’t go through with this. Square and take a break from Final Fantasy X-whatever and get some much better rep from their fans.

Fans everywhere almost everyday wanted to see another SMRPG or a remake. They need to answer that call.

Don’t know, the game may be a big cult-classic, and one of the more popular SNES games, (in Nintendo Power it was one of the most highly-requested remakes for GBA by readers) and worst of all, in said Square-developed Mario sports games, (“Mario Hoops 3-on-3,” and “Mario Sports Mix”) they had FF characters as unlockables, but no Geno, or any Mario RPG cameos at all. It’s like Square & Nintendo forgot all about that game…

Though, to be fair, some of the music was reused/remixed in games like Fortune Street. (If that’s how the music for a Super Mario RPG HD remake/sequel would sound, I’m all for it.)

@Beau Skunky
That last part made me do an expression on what Twilight is doing in the picture. If that has happened. Then WHY haven’t we seen a sequel to Super Mario RPG or even a remastered version of the game for the 3DS?

If an FiM game is ever made, I hope Hasbro licenses it to Wayforward. They expressed interest in making one, (remarking “Lauren Faust rules”) and they are one of the few modern developers that makes GOOD licensed games. (Like their “Adventure Time” 3DS game, and “Batman Brave and the Bold” Wii game.)

Yeah, Miyamoto should’ve let them make it more like “Thousand Year Door” it sounds like. Even if it’s a decent game, it sounds nowhere near as good as the other Paper Marios, and it sounds like they cut out alot of things I liked about the series.
Makes me wish Miyamoto (as much as I adore him) was less involved in the RPG games, and would give them more freedom with them. I also kinda wish Nintendo would team up with Square/Enix again, and either make a new “Super Mario RPG” game, (as it’s the only RPG Mario title without a direct sequel) or remake the SNES “Legend of the Seven Stars” game.
(Oddly, they did collaborate on a few Mario sports titles sense then. So Square/Enix is on good terms with Nintendo.)
Rarewarefan

Still waiting for an official FIM video game to happen. I will admit. I had high hopes for Sticker Star, but was let down that it wasn’t like Thousand Year door and the first paper mario. the thought of a paper mario game for the 3DS is a good idea, but the execution wasn’t.

The resemblance to New Super Mario Bros. would make a lot of sense.

I probably need to start playing Dark Moon a lot more now that you mention what it does that Sticker Star fails to do in comparison. Now that I think of it, I remember shrugging and rolling my eyes at the reused voice clips for E Gadd which got more painful than in any way nostalgic.

Something else I remember is that Miyamoto said he didn’t want to introduce any new characters in Sticker Star, so thus hardly any partners and the like, but they kinda broke that rule right off the bat with Kersti. Not that I question that, she felt a lot like Starlow from the M&L series and I mostly just rolled with it even if they never elaborated much in the way of background on them even as the game would go on. Though, I probably can’t say something like that as I’ve neither finished Sticker Star nor played Dream Team, and a lot of other games would surely have characters like that.

@chainchomp2
I wouldn’t say Super Mario 3D Land has a lot of elements in Sticker Star. Its actually the New Super Mario Bros. series that is very common in the game. All enemies and bosses are base on the NSMB designs and the environments aswell. You may even call it “New Paper Mario”.

To me I actually like the idea that all Super Mario mainstream enemies are the only exclusive opponents in the game. That’s just me as a fan, more focus on Mario enemies, not just original OC’s.

Maybe it’s because games like New Leaf gives you free region to explore and experiment, not limit you down to follow a path and try to succeed.

Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon does the same thing with its chapters, but its done differently. Theres a proceeding plot behind the story in each one. Its not just, ‘starting point is X go all the way to Y’. There’s always a problem in between that throws you off course and you need to take different routes to explore and discover. There’s something missing you need to find, a ghost stole this you must get it back before proceeding, environment hazards needs taking care of. Dark Moon does it just right that its not always tedious and its also part of the exploration.

Sticker Star didn’t do this so well. Even though you can go to any of the first available four Worlds to do whatever, your limited down because you need to go on a fetch quest and backtrack constantly in order to even proceed if you don’t have the correct “Things” for the puzzles or sometimes a sticker. Its very tedious to no end. Its even worst since each world boss is STRONGER than the next and their HP is in the HUNDREDS, and Mario’s starting HP is a mesely 10 and you need to find as many HP+ if you ever want a chance to survive. Sticker Star can be a mess.

I made it to the beginning part of World 5 before I got bored, though admittedly, claiming Thousand-Year Door to be my favorite video game to date would have definitely played with my expectations or outlook on the game. Seemed a lot more like 3D Land with a Paper Mario label over it as a bit of my long-shot and probably ignorant observation.

3D Land and Dark Moon suffered the same fate as far as me never getting quite hooked on them, but that’s probably just me preferring games like New Leaf rather than stuff actually wrong with the games or expecting them to be like their original title in Dark Moon’s case.

That reference with SML is a music that plays with one of the Thing Stickers use in battle.

Yeah, that is true. But I’m kinda pev that they still gave the game decent high rantings, 7/10, ***1/2 stars out of 5. Seriously? I know the rating system isn’t always going to be in favor for the fans, but still…

Hmmm… Bummer, but still some gave it good reviews regardless, but acknowledge it’s faults.

I’m curious what that “Super Mario Land” reference is, sense you never see the SML Gameboy games referenced much in Mario games. (Aside from Wario & Daisy being recurring characters in the spinoff sports/kart/party games.)

A few months ago I came across a website that perfectly explains why “Paper Mario: Sticker Star” is the worst in the series. Unfortunately I can’t find it anymore to provide a link for you and others can read yourself, so I’m just going to break it down by memory in the simplest of ways.

The BAD
-the game becomes BORING and TEDIOUS at some point (if you’re a long running Paper Mario fan veteran, it will become noticeable).

-the boss battle system is broken. Bosses have too much HP for regular sticker attacks to accommodate. Thing Stickers (real life objects turned into stickers) are too OP, even for the key weakness.

-Bowser has been reduce to silent villain and you don’t see him and Peach again until the final boss battle.

-zero character development with any of the main cast that made their first debate in a Paper Mario: Kamek and Bowser Jr.

-bland dialogues, jokes can be a hit and miss. Boring.

-no real value comes from normal battles, only coins.

-you WILL go through multiple fetch quests just to reobtain a real life object (Things) for a puzzle and maybe to fight boss battles. That’s the tedious part.

~~of course you can buy “Things”, but they cost A LOT of money!

-100% completion is not worth the trouble…at all…

-Kersti the Sticker Fairy is even less useful than Tippi from “Super Paper Mario” when it comes to field hints. Basically, you’re on your own. Good luck with that.

~~THAT ONE F-ING LEVEL: World 5-3 is the absolute WORST! You WILL instantly get a Game Over the moment the Chomp Cheap screws you, because of the slow moving raft. If that’s not bad enough, this level gets even harder when you beat it and revist the course. Prepare to listen to the game over music over a dozen times and more.

-when the game was in development, Miyamoto himself claims that the game was way too similar to “The Thousand Year Door” and wants the new dev team to do a complete redo. Sticker Star was born.

-Miyamoto wants less story heavy in a RPG Paper Mario game as much as possible

The Good
-graphics are beautiful.

-the in game music are wonderful.

-there are a few shout outs to past games (ex: Super Mario Land)

-there are interesting surprises.

My overall opinion, its not bad, but its not good either. Its the worst in the series. I strongly suggest you just watch it on YouTube.

@Arne
The sticker system was stupid. It had limited use in battle and seldom used in puzzles.

And there are even worse things about the game. Such as a lack of an experience mechanic. I know the creator of the game wanted to try something new, but removing the experience mechanic makes battling random enemies almost meaningless. Aside from getting coins, which are seldom useful, there is almost no reason to fight random enemies.
Arne

Yeah… that’s pretty much it, really. It’s a RPG… a genre that tends to put a lot of importance on story… yet the story of the game is almost non-existent.

I also think the whole sticker system is kinda stupid… but that might just be me.

I haven’t played it yet, but I’m curious why the newest one is so hated. From what I hear it mostly stems from the fact that there’s a li’l less “story/characterization” this time around, and the fact Mario doesn’t have any allies in this one.

I do hear Kamek (of “Yoshi’s Island”) returns in it though. Even though he looks like a normal Magikoopa, I always liked him.
