(facepalm) I just popped in the game in question into my 360 for old times sake, took one look at the loading screen and instantly remembered the most popular reason for why people hate Sonic ’06.

@Twilight_Shimmer
The human female protagonist of the Xbox 360 game Sonic the Hedgehog, a.k.a. Sonic ‘06, the most hated Sonic game to date. (Personally, the only things I found actually wrong with it were the horrible voiceovers, and a bit of poor NPC programming.) She’s || the 17-yr-old princess and ruler of a city called Soleanna. Eggman and a evil hedgehog-like creature named Mephiles the Dark were after her (separately; Eggman and Mephiles never even see one another throughout the course of the game) for the creature known as Iblis, the Flames of Disaster. Iblis is a living flame-entity, which was sealed inside of Elise ten years before the story begins, by her father, the Duke of Soleanna, who died soon after, leaving her with his final words: ‘Don’t cry, no matter what happens’. (Her mother also died, at an unspecified amount of time prior to her father’s death) During the Festival of the Sun, (an annual (?) celebration held in honor of the sun god, Solaris, that the people of Soleanna worship), Eggman attacked in hopes of capturing the princess. As is usual, Sonic showed up, in the nick of time to save her. Things continue on like this, with Elise finding herself in and out of Eggman’s clutches a couple times. Over time, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge, E-123 Omega, Amy, Blaze and Silver the Hedgehog (another character who debuted in this game) get involved in one way or another. Elise found herself falling in love with Sonic over time because he was the one to free her from the perpetual state of fake optimism she had trapped herself in since her father died, knowing that her tears would release Iblis from its seal.||
What I have here isn’t the full story, just a summary; if you want the full story, with all the details, then google sonic news network elise.

Don’t get me wrong; I don’t support Sonic/Elise. It’s just…hasn’t the ‘female protagonist kisses the dead male protagonist, miraculously reviving him through the power of love’ shtick been done even before Sonic ’06 debuted?
Because Elise kinda sorta implied she loved him for reasons that had nothing to do with him being dead at that moment.
