Depression doesn’t make sense. It gnaws away at you, even when you know it’s not true, your brain keeps telling you it is. Even if Luna had/made the batponies, the rest of Equestria was mostly day-dwelling. And that was enough to creep in and start her down the path of becoming Nightmare Moon.

Or Nightmare moon created bat ponies to be her loyal worshipers. Created them from the innocent ponies of Celestia’s royal guard who did not fall in line. And once she was banished to the moon they were left masterless and mind control wore off but batness remained. Now 1000 years later they’re second class minority and not generally mixed with pony populations aside from the ones Luna manages to hire now as her own guards ponies to make up what she did 1000 years ago. At least that’s what I headcanonized.

Well we saw Rainbow Dash with bat wings in the Nightmare Moon timeline. So it’s possible the bat appearance is just a magical illusion from the armor. Meant to give them a “Night guard” look.

They’ve released batpony figures, the guards pulling Luna’s chariot, from the Nightmare Night set. Granted, you could still say they’re in costume, but I don’t think they are. I think they’re simply Luna’s personalized guards. A way to distinguish hers from Celestia’s. Maybe it’s with a magical spell altering their appearance? Maybe they’re actually genetically different. A form of a pegasi subspecies. But they still have a canon, if murky, status.

I’m not looking through 5 pages of comments to see if its been said or not so I am going to say it anyways.
