No, it really doesn’t. The very idea that a show of this quality and this message, which dropped into the 2010/11 internet environment of people being fed up with cynicism-for-cynicism’s-sake, would have perished in obscurity if not for 4chan is beyond ridiculous. All /co/ and /mlp/ did was spread the early FIM fandom faster through the College Age guys demographic than it would have otherwise, and that definitely played a role in the fandom getting as big as quickly as it did, but they in absolutely no way “invented” the fandom out of thin air the way they pretend to have done.

Dude, aren’t you taking this too literally? There wasn’t a massive surge of Bronies back in 2004. Hell, MLP fans weren’t even called Bronies. A bunch of Anons literally coined the term on /co/ before /mlp/ was a thing.
 
Think of 4chan as Bethesda. You might have heard of Fallout, maybe you didn’t, but when Fallout 3 came about, the franchise’s brand recognition skyrocketed. Sure you may not like Bethesda today, but you gotta admit, without them, we wouldn’t be here. This applies to 4chan.

It began the same place every other fandom does: [waves hand at pop culture in general]. Demanding “sources” for the beginning of something which has no one solitary starting point is just a transparently phony attempt to prop up whatever group begged the question by nominating itself as the origin and then points to that self-nomination as if it were some kind of empirical evidence of anything other than narcissism. MLP fandom has existed worldwide since 1984 and managed to survive the nightmare of G3.75, it is patently absurd to assume that a bunch of latecomers to the franchise on one website somehow invented the concept of fan participation in a toy/cartoon property that had been organizing actual conventions since 2004. How many MLP get-togethers was 4chan organizing in 2004?

It goes a little deeper than that. They’ve always been really stubborn about this sort of warped sense of “free speech” that they had. The site is built in such a way that you can harass someone for years and face no repercussions for it. Some people on my server did some testing, and there are proxies that actually get past their “anti proxy security” You could harass someone from one proxy, get maybe a 2 day ban, switch to another proxy, and by the time that one gets a 2 day ban the other one is usable again.
 
We suggested measures to levitate the issue and were scoffed at and ignored. They sat there with their thumbs up their asses and did nothing of any use whatsoever because “muh free speech.”
