Advance
Alright, where to begin?
The animation was good, but suffered from being either too sharp or too fluid. All together it was pretty, but the changes in quality really stood out. Snowdrop’s was better in my opinion.
Even as a fan episode this work suffers greatly in story, pacing, writing and voice acting.
The writing was one of the most awkward things I’ve ever viewed, especially the long sequences of silence and the dialogue between Twilight and Dash. I think I could’ve done better, and I’m not even a writer, this was obviously a problem since the very beginning of production and the fact that no one tried to rectify it is just mind-boggling to me.
The pacing was horrendous, it jumps around from “fast Dash action scene” to “awkward moments of standing around” in matters of seconds. I understand that the director/writer was trying to capture the feelings of the characters with moments of extended facial expression, but it just doesn’t work without dialogue, a classic example of trying to translate the character’s emotions in your brain to the characters emotions on the screen, a problem that should’ve, once again, been rectified early in production.
Now the story…the fricken story. Just, wow… The whole episode is just “look at how awesome dash is” and “look at dash flying” with shout-outs and references strewn throughout. And then out of fricken nowhere the whole thing turns into a PPG crossover fic. Why the hell would they do that!? I would’ve been fine with it if I’d gotten a heads-up before hand, but when the animation is marketed as “the first ever fan episode” I expect it to be like an actual episode! And that Pinkie scene at the end (which was cringeworthy in its own right) has the director ever heard of a “deus ex machina”?
Twilight’s voice work was good, Pinkie’s and Dash’s were mediocre, but the actors in and of themselves were not he problem, it was the voice direction. Just simply horrible, Dash sounded like Ash from Pokemon for crying out loud!
The characters were very OOC as well. Twilight was too sarcastic and critical and Dash was too…awesome? Too narcissistic? Too idiotic? I can’t even pinpoint it, but she was not the Dash we knowand love.
Twilight, Dash and Pinkie had all the dialogue. I mean, for a fan episode you expect it to focus on the main 6, or at least give all of them lines. But what happens instead? The fricken Power Puff Girls! They gave those 3 screen time that could’ve easily been given to the mane cast.
I did like a few scenes, like Twi hooking up Dash to her lab equipment and the credit sequence. But besides a few moments of entertainment, the episode altogether felt like a giant fan-wank to stroke the ego of Rainbow Dash, who, as I have stated, was portrayed horribly.
Animation- 8/10
Story- 4/10
Characters- 5/10
Pacing- 3/10
Voice acting- -7-4/10 (-3 for poor direction)
Writing- 3/10
Verdict- 4.5/10
Had promise and was worked on by many talented people, but was ultimately doomed by poor writing and direction.
