Even Pwny, who ends up yelling how the writing killed it, admits there is a story. HE has a critique. You? Just a painfully obvious example of bandwagoning.
I found the cross-over pretty good, except for the fact that there weren’t MORE CN shows featured, otherwise it was as advertised. the appearance of all the other characters made me think more was gonna happen
I went in to it thinking it would be like watching an episode of the show. But what i got was a bad fanfic and 100’s of references.
Thankfully this will be judged on animation and not story
@IchtudirWeh
The problem was that the PPG stuff was not advertised and it literally came out of nowhere. We weren’t expecting a cross over to begin with.
A MLP and PPG crossover? No thanks, I’ll pass on this one. I found the PPGs to be irritating when I was younger. For everyone complaining/criticizing; How much development of a storyline do you want from those two crossovers? The PPG show didn’t have a serious plot to begin with. Sounds like this so called project was doomed from the beginning.
There seam to be many people saying that it was filled with references and in jokes. Yes the episode was mostly a line of gags but how many up front references and in-jokes were there? as far as I know I could count were five. the rest were background stuff.
Biggest problem for me is the over-reliance on reference humor over the character-based humor that made me a fan of the show to start with. There were also pacing issues in that the plot basically gets stopped for minutes at a time to make jokes that don’t advance the plot in any way. That and a lot of shots were inexplicably held for a few seconds too long, which threw off the flow.
I honestly didn’t mind the PPG stuff; I thought it was done better than the straight FIM material.
@PwnyPony
I suppose if you want to put it that way, then yes, there was a story. But it was essentially thrown to the sidelines in favor of… well, everything else.
Sorry for getting a little heated. I normally set my expectations low (I’m actually fairly easily entertained as long as something has a decent attempt at depth and substance to it) so when something fails to live up to my low expectations it gets me very disappointed.
For a while before hand, I was expecting good writing, voice acting, and pacing. But after the episode was finished, I was left disappointed.
Pros:
+The Story Idea was good. 10/10
+animation was pretty good. 9/10
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Cons:
-The Voice acting was horrible. 3/10
-The references were out of hand. 4/10
-It turned into a sub-par crossover fic about halfway in with the Power Puff Girls. 1/10
-The way they handled Pinkie Pie and basically jumping dimensions wasn’t the best. 6/10
-Everyone was out of Character 4/10
The actual story Idea that they used was pretty good, but they went way over the top with the Cartoon Network portal and references. The voice acting was pretty bad, they didn’t sound much like themselves, especially Rainbow Dash. Personally, Rainbow Dash sounded a little to much like Ash Ketchum for my comfort. I mean come on, they could’ve at least tried harder and found better voice actors. Then it seemed to have turned into a full on crossover fic. Oh great, somehow Rainbow Dash opened the portal to the World of the Power Puff Girls! Then of course, Pinkie pie came in and did some portal jumping after Twilight made another potion! I can see why Pinkie Pie would be the one to go after her and her having the power to do that at will, but it was just a little bit cliche. Not to mention how everyone was out of Character.
However, the actually idea that they had for the story was excellent, “Rainbow Dash drinks a potion that gives her physical enhancements and shit goes down after the side effects hit.” Also, the animation was very good. The Animation and quality of the animation was very close to show style, but was just a little bit off. My favorite animations and animations was from when Rainbow Dash was in the PPG universe. I loved the art style they used there, and Rainbow Dash in that art style was very nice; I’d actually like to see more fanart of her drawn in this style.
Overall, I think I’d rate this at about 5.5/10. The hype that is accumulated so much hype, but just didn’t live up to it. I’m pretty sure that after I sit down and watch it again, i’ll probably like it alot more and most of my criticism will go away, Just like it did with Magical Mystery Cure.
Watch the episode, from beginning to end. Count how many scenes actually involve the “story” you wrote out. Any time the story is not being moved along (ie: fandom references, memes, awkward periods of silence, etc), count how long until the “story” starts moving again.
The time spent not moving the story along is much, much greater than the time spent on the supposed “story”. That’s why the memes and references and shit are what the writing is. Because that’s all that gets the focus.
Pwny, the reason everyone’s complaining about “references and memes” instead of “complaining about writing” is because the references and memes were basically all that the writing was. There was no story, again, no beginning, middle or end. All that the episode was was one stupid reference, meme or injoke, then another, then another and another. Nothing coherent, nothing understandable, nothing that you could string together in a proper story.
It seems too obvious to mention but if you’re going to hype your project as a fan made pony episode, the ponies should be front and center the whole time.
The story was this.
Twilight makes a potion which makes ponies better at there talents. Dash steals the potion for herself and shows off her ability by trying a “Double Rainboom” which causes her to rip through the cartoon universe and end up in another cartoon. Then her wings become paralyzed and she is trapped in the power puff girls world and hiding from the PPG. Pinkie then saves her with her extra 4th wall powers gained from the potion. They then finish with dash writing a letter to Celestia about her experience while the ponies of ponyville repair the place.
^ Too Short for my liking.
Like the original king kong movie
It could have been saved by doing what Peter Jackson did with the movie.
(giffing for attention)
The time used for showing needless scenes (dash showing off, strung out references and long lasting memes. Random stuff stuff in the background would be fine) could have been used to tell more story.
For example while dash was trapped in the Other cartoon universe they could have switched back and forth between dash exploring and the other ponies trying to make the potion (Twilight could forget how she made the potion or not have the right ingedients)and worry about dash not coming back.
The complainers are too busy whining about too many references when they could actually complain about something that could have affected the dam thing.
You know for as bad as the episode is you got to give them credit that they actually made an episode, that’s basically reaching a higher plane of nerd. I’m pretty sure that’s a good thing.

yea, no.
What writing? The episode was a slew of references strung together one after another.
Twilight makes a potion which makes ponies better at there talents. THE WRITING KILLED IT
