it seems to be because of theri gems. heck it might be the gems were the source of theri power all along. they feed on dark feeling and become something monstrous.

to be fair the windigos only fed on disharmony, they were not a source…..
alternate fan theory. they were water sprites that found remnants of the windigos that attacked equestria and used it to gain power.
…… already forming a fan theory. they were once water sprites, perhaps a kelpie, but using those rubies to collect negative energy they grew corrupt and dangerous. interstingly enough the pictures we saw did show gem shapes on theri chests.
