That’s a very sound theory, for the most part. I think I adapt this until we find out in the movie.

He should totally be like Mr. Freeze from Batman and Robin.

Hypothesis:  
He intends to logically extinguish or block out the sun, and he must do so by stealing Celestia and Luna’s magic and set permanent Eclipse, which Freezes Equestria over.  
However To keep it this way (When the heroes will get second chance at stopping hi.), he needs to magically allign the rest of the planets so that they somehow share Earth’s temperature, completely freezing whole universe, and giving a far greater kingdom than even Tirek could imagine.
 
Motivation:  
He was born months before the Yeti were banished to the frozen north or whatever, and is stung by how Yeti after him never knew a world beyond the cold, and how they can now Not live without it.
 
Plus, he is offended by how the Ponies consider winter to be a curse or a place to banish evil…

That’s another good point. If they were his army, then why only attacking ponies, and not griffons or dragons as well?

For a moment, I was thinking he maybe could have created them, then vanished somehow, and the windigos stayed behind as his legacy, roaming free and creating destruction where they can.  
But that would still mean they can only be of use for him if the kingdom he wants to attack is divided by hatred, so, as I said, they would be a very ineffective army for him and also too uncontrollable. Dark masters like to control their minions and would have to as well, to not get overthrown by them and in order to make their plans work.  
That’s why I threw this thought out pretty quickly.

I agree. While I strongly believe that this character had a lot to do with blizzards and snowstorms, I don’t think he has anything to do with the Windegos, as those ONLY prey upon the 3 pony races (griffonstone is shown to be in constant disharmony but no windegos there…).

What I’m saying is, several episodes of the show have made clear that they literally only come when ponies live in disharmony with each other, when they fight and hate each other, on their own accord.  
Having a master would mean said master sends them to attack certain lands in order to conquer or simply destroy those, but with the way they basically get summoned by emotions, the exact opposite is indicated. They are evil spirits, maybe even directly born from negative emotions, not members of someone’s personal army.  
Because they only attack and bring destruction if the circumstances are the right ones, which they weren’t for more than a thousand years in Equestria now, they would be a pretty ineffective army for any enemy of Equestria.

That’s a pretty small hurdle for the writers to jump.

I heard this a few times now, it seems to become a pretty popular theory about The Storm King. With what we heard about the windigos, though, it’s impossible.  
They feed on hatred and negative emotions and that’s the only thing that makes them destroy lands with snowstorms, which shows that they act independently, without a master telling them what to do.

I take it no one here has ever seen Ray Donovan (TV series on Showtime)? Liev plays the main character, and he’s really good in it.

Oh! He’s definitely a yeti. It fits too well. He’s the guy who froze the old pony homeland using his pet windingoes and now he’s set his eyes on equestria.
 
Then that would mean that this new land the ponies are traveling to may be their original homeland, long since turned into this guy’s frozen dominion of doom.

So he’s what? A yeti? That’s cool. Though, I do wonder if the show will ever delve into truly ape-like villains. Maybe have apes as a parody of human evils? Like pollution, or greed, or something of the sort?

I kind of get a Transformers: Prime Megatron vibe from the design.

I get those vibes too. He seems to be like another “take over the world/homeland” type villain. At best this guy will be a generic movie villain. Not a total wash but I not gonna get my expectations for him too high.
