He intends to logically extinguish or block out the sun, and he must do so by stealing Celestia and Luna's magic and set permanent Eclipse, which Freezes Equestria over.  
However To keep it this way (When the p
Hheroes will get second chance at stopping hi.), he needs to magically allign the rest of the planets so that they somehow share Earth's temperature, completely freezing whole universe, and giving a far greater kingdom than even Tirek could imagine.


 
Motivation:
 
He was born months before the Yeti were banished to the frozen north or whatever, and is stung by how Yeti after him never knew a world beyond the cold, and how they can now Not live without it.


 
Plus, he is offended by how the Ponies consider winter to be a curse or a place to banish evil...
