@RicardoRenegado
For those already determined to hate Starlight, yes, the special was certainly more fuel for the fire.
@angrybrony
For once, I have to agree with you. Mirror Magic could have (and should have) been so much more. I guess that’s the trouble when you try to condense that much story into only 22 minutes.
@cloudkicker108
what @ChuymaruZ said.
what alo is really galling is that we won’t be seeing sunset for who knows how long and she wasn’t the lead of any the specials and didn’t do much, this would have been the perfect time to have her take the lead with star.
@RicardoRenegado
because we expected this especial will make peace between fans showing sunset and starlight working together…but it was just another excuse to make starlight look awesome and cool…
@RicardoRenegado
Not really. Most people seem to consider Starlight’s behavior in the special as separate from her character in the show proper. That being said, even I can’t deny that many aspects of that special, including Starlight’s performance, left a lot to be desired and could have been significantly improved.
@cloudkicker108
To me, I’m not sure it’s just the type of emotions so much as the history behind them. The rift between them is older than any of us can comprehend, it may well be older than Equestria itself. To expect them to simply “get over” a bitterness that predates the bulk of recorded history? In a word, “implausible”.
@Scrounge
Exactly. With the type of emotions they were feeling, the sisters were clearly beyond simply communicating with each other.
As for the Luna bit, I also believe that Luna likely had not returned yet when Starlight began her town. I only mentioned her to keep consistent with Esteban’s comment, who apparently seems convinced she had returned by that point.
@Esteban @cloudkicker108
What makes either of you think Luna was back before Starlight started he village? Even if she did keep track of newspaper and magazine articles on Celestia, the only source of information on Luna would have been an old fable that most ponies totally ignored at the time. (I’m going to assume that the existence of another alicorn, namely Cadance, was known to the public at large, since when Twilight showed up, Starlight not shocked by the possibility of an alicorn other than Celestia, but Luna is NOT just another alicorn.)
@cloudkicker108
And let’s face it, extreme measures were probably needed. This is a sibling rivalry with over a thousand years of history and hurt feelings behind it. Getting them to talk it out, especially given their respective schedules, could have taken anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and even after they opened up, it might be months, years, or even decades before they finally resolved all their issues… and that’s if it worked at all.
Making them trade places is a bit cliched, but I can certainly buy into it being the right solution… Though I’d give Glimglam more credit if that solution had been the result of contemplation rather than a snap judgment. But better lucky than good, I guess.
@Esteban
And just because she lived under the rule of the princesses at one point doesn’t automatically imply she must know all the intricacies and nuances of their lives or for that matter even respect them.
@cloudkicker108
She still psend her childhood and teenage years with her own family and under Princesses reign. Just because she made her own town when she grew up doesn’t mean she doesn’t know whats happening.
@Esteban
The problem with Discord (aside from his utterly unpredictable nature) is that he would not have been burdened with the same weight that Starlight was, and as a result that entire dream sequence would not have occurred.
Also, what do you mean by “Starlight never lived under a rock”? Our Town was so isolated from the rest of Equestria that she pretty much was. Although she was born in Equestria and likely knew of the princesses from her childhood onwards, she clearly did not give much thought to them.
@cloudkicker108
Woudn’t it make much more sense if it was Discord switching their cutie mark? He was always established as someone who disregard every princess and use his own ways of giving someone a lesson. Starlight never lived under a rock. She was born and raised under Princesses order. Her disrespect and indifference to the Princess doesn’t feel natural and them not even being able to dispel as spell made by a mere unicorn gave them another nerfing brick to the already nerfed characters status.
@Pagan
She isn’t. It just so happens that in this particular case she’s the key to the solution.
@Exedrus
Exactly. Introducing a completely new plot device in a story like this would have just made things even more awkward. Not to mention that her technique, which probably no pony else would have even considered using, was likely the only means to have the sisters learn to reconcile with each other in that situation.
@Pagan
Although in this case, she seems like logical answer. Using a existing/established past to setup this sort of event seems like a better option than introducing a magic device fit for the situation shortly before using it.
@cloudkicker108 so, switching cm maked luna responsible of the sun and celestia responsible of the moon? ya know, moving both things to bring day and night because fucking basic laws of physics dont apply and we need 2 big winged-horned horses to do it
