The problem with Discord (aside from his utterly unpredictable nature) is that he would not have been burdened with the same weight that Starlight was, and as a result that entire dream sequence would not have occurred.


 
Also, what do you mean by "Starlight never lived under a rock"? Our Town was so isolated from the rest of Equestria that she pretty much was. Although she was born in Equestria and likely knew of the princesses from her childhood onwards, she clearly did not give much thought to them.
