Decided to test out my gamepad on a game called CrossCode. I already finished this game so no problem for me to test all its features.
If you don’t know what CrossCode it, go search for it on Google. Typing on a phone is hard. But basically, it’s a top-down 2D retro RPG/platformer with pixel-art graphics. It’s a fun game, and supports the gamepad.
So, here are my points:
Pros:
- Movement is like smooth as butter. Due to the platforming and top-down design, CrossCode works way better with the analog stick compared to the WASD keys. Since jumping is automatic, I can control my character more accurately.
- Switching modes work well too by using the D-pad. On a keyboard, I had to set 4 keys to change elemental modes, which isn’t that ideal since the game shows the elemental modes as a 4 direction buttons.
- Combat feels faster than ever and I can do the dash attack more easily than before. This means I can use the super dash attacks more often, which are really helpful.
Cons:
- Aiming is just difficult with an analog stick. The mouse will always be superior on this part.
- Using the ranged attack in general is just harder. The mouse once more dominates this, and ranged attacks are very important.
- Guarding feels harder too, since it used to be RMB on the mouse, and I can change direction of guard by moving my mouse. On the gamepad, the guard is put unintuitively at the O button, which is just bad.
- I can’t change the keys on the gamepad unlike the keyboard. Though, this is more of a game fault than the gamepad. Key bindings for the gamepad is dumb.
Overall, the gamepad is a good quality for €15 or so. It’s one of the cheaper ones on Amazon, so it’s a total steal.
