If I can make a random guess, maybe the artwork is a reference to a herm story starring Hum!Sonic in a massive female crossover fanfic.


 
I had come across a few stories base on that subject (not about Sonic, but other male characters...I think), usually Princess Peach will always end up being on that list of females among others from the Mario series.
