When the show first started it had Misty. There's Jessie from Team Rocket, Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny "hot". It had girls so that helped a bit. Not to mention Brock who undoubtedly reeked of Axe. There was some adult aspects apart from hurting animals.
I was a Digimon fan myself and even had it on PS1, when I watched the newer episodes I was agonizingly bored.
