We got Misty (our late family cat, and the same cat pictured in my profile avatar) when she was a kitten, and just before I started kindergarten. She lived a good 14 years, which meant she was a direct, living connection to my past. To top it off, she was a cat who didn't mind sharing a bed with us, or being —carefully —held close while sleeping beneath the covers.
Having a soft, purring cat asleep next to me was always a soothing, healing experience...
