I fully agree they should have done it, and about the boundless potential for amusing situations that could come as the result of it as well. However, a part of me can't help but believe that they wouldn't bring such a massive change to his character midway through a season. Probably because episodes 3-24 of every season are usually randomized and don't tend to connect with each other most of the time, so I feel such a large impact episode that would permanently _*(or not, depending on whether he can change back)_* changes Spike's appereance, is probably something they'd include in a season opener or finale.


 
Sure, they did it with CMC's cutiemarks, but that was a much less drastic cosmetic change than making "little Spike" larger than all his friends and with wings. Something like that would be premiere/finale material, in my opinion.
