I think the notorious Power Glove (made by Mattel, not even a game company) is the reason Nintendo doesn't allow third-parties to make official accessories for their consoles anymore.
 
At least, the Wii-remote shows motion gaming can be done properly. (Well, unless you ask the Wii-haters. Some people are actually still afraid to touch a Wii-mote. "Ew casual!" lol)

Maybe a character designer really liked Launchpad McQuack from "Duck Tales."


 
I actually liked DiC's redesigns for King Bowser Koopa & Robotnik in the old Mario & Sonic cartoons, but the Captain N redesigns were kinda...  
Well, at least Zelda & Link looked kinda cool. (Yes, they sometimes guest-starred on "Captain N")
