The drama calmed down after the first EqG movie came out, but surprisingly, "Rainbow Rocks" was pretty well-received. (It even got many fans to like Sunset Shimmer, as before many thought she was a cliché "high school alpha-bitch" character in the first movie.)
I suppose I can understand why some dislike it. As for instance, making the Ninja Turtles human, would make them no longer the TMNT. Some also felt the high school setting was too cliché, or a cheap attempt to appeal to younger tweens, and compete with "Monster High." But I guess it depends on how it's handled. The EqG movies and official animated shorts, (I loved the shorts) managed to keep at least the same sense of humor, magical adventure aspects, and character personalities fans loved.

Yet,
the writer's ignored her existence for half of Season 6, and screwed up things a few times.
