I've always likened Twilight's role to the same as Tina Bradford's. In a Dissidia interview, Whozits thought of Final Fantasy VI as not having one primary mane protagonist like Cecil and Cloud, but instead every playable character was thought of as their own Mmane protagonist. However, since Dissidia required a solitary protagonist for each individual entry in the series, the logical choice was to include the very first mane character.


 
Though Twilight's star does shine the brightest, by design, even then, the notion that "everypony is the hero of their own story" ~ Mayor Mare c.2015, still persists. Much like Tina. :3
