1. If Sonic is running on curved ground, then he's travelling extra distance (as we see him zig and zag across the mountaintops and over the hills), so if he's keeping up with Dash (who is flying straight), then he's actually going faster.


 
2. This reminds me of XK Pluto. A remote-operated mach 4 nuclear ramjet the Air Force drew up (though thankfully never built - as far as we know) which could go mach 4 at treetop level. An SR-71 would burn up doing that. But by doing that, you could create a shockwave behind the craft that would leave a path of destruction.


 
(I mean, it carried nukes and left radioactive exhaust, but just the shockwave thing came to mind with this)
