I think it can work out if you will make them smaller to fit the normal player character size.
 
After all it is just a sprite no the screen, the game doesn't care if it is a human or not, you'll have to adjust the animations of items that are held to fit levitation as well.
 
Or you can add them as mobs, in that case there are almost no restraints that I can think of.
