I don't understand why Spike needed to express a desire for stereotypical dragon things for this to make sense?

What does it have to do with growing up? Boys don't have to dream about becoming tenors when they grow up for their voices to become deeper as they age. So they didn't need to make it a special destiny thing, or an achieving your goals thing. Its just him getting older and reaching the dragon version of puberty apparently. Which is fine.

He's not a unicorn like Twilight, a race that isn't supposed to fly, that had to make gaining wings a grandiose event. He's from a race that more often than not (almost always in fact) has wings as a normal part of their anatomy. So outside of people's individual headcanons and prefferences, Spike growing wings was a normal thing to expect from his natural development.

And he's still unique for me. He's the only dragon raised by ponies. His personality is completely different from the rest of them (which gets pointed out all the time), and seems to be the bridge between dragons and ponies, who for who knows how long have never understood each other.

Also, him having wings like other dragons doesn't automatically close any possibilities of his past/origins being explored in a special way either. Why would only lacking wings make that possibile? If they truly palanned to do something with that (which I doubt was ever a plan, sadly), then they could still do it. Not having wings like the rest of his race wasn't the only thing they could use to make him special.

He's from a race that more often than not (almost always in fact) has wings as a normal part of their anatomy. So outside of people's individual headcanons and prefferences, Spike growing wings was a perfectly normal thing to expect from his noaturmal development.
