I believe Celestia and Luna rather "Ascended to Higher Plane of Existence":http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence .
This also is possibly meant to show a peacefull change in power, as opposed to violent wars of Young Gods with the Elder Gods from many stories, like many myths, ie the Titanomachy, earlier Kronos overtrowing and
castrating
Ouranos (the Sky/Heavens), the Hittite version that inspired it, were Alalu was overtrown by Anu (also Sky/Heavens), only for Anu to be overtrown and castrated by his son Kumarbi, who in turn was overtrown by his own son, Teshub/Tarhuna, or Enuma Elish, were Marduk overtrows and murders Tiamat (and crafting the universe out of
her corpse
), or Odin, Vili and Wee (Vili and Wee possibly being in reality Hoenir and Lodur/Loki) killing and overtrowing Ymir (and again creating the universe out of
his corpse
), in Aztec mythology, the goddess Coatlicue being overtrown an
decapitated
by her daughter Coyolxauhqui and Coatlicue's four hundred other children, and many other examples.
