Dare I ask why you think she doesn't deserve to be a princess? She was Celestia's most prized student, groomed to become an alicorn, chosen of the Tree of Harmony, leader of the Mane 6, and her accomplishments speak for themselves.


 
And how is it a deus ex machina solution? Its more a loophole than anything else. The EEA covers all of Equestria's schools, but that was because every school was one that could function under its guidelines, helping ponies learn spells, agriculture, weather manipulation, etc. Twilight's school is unique, it isn't just for ponies and so the rules for it have to be different. Those rules did not exist, but Twilight had the authority to make them. Its not like she forced the school to be accredited, she just found a way around it where it could still have some legitimacy.
